Roli the goalie: our new Number 1

I'm at work, but good news: we have a number one goalie. Dwayne Roloson for a First round pick (and a third rounder if he re-signs with the Oil), which is a pretty good deal considering how many first round picks we muff. That and he's not Cujo or Belfour and his .910 SV% will win us some of the games we don't deserve to lose.

His highly unoriginal nickname is Roli; feel free to wait for him at the International Airport and say hello.

You beat me to it, Mikey. I'm not horribly enthusiastic about this trade — is Roloson *really* a number-one goalie, after all? — but it's an upgrade nonetheless.

He was more or less the Oilers' only option, I think - Biron's staying where he is, and Roloson's a better goalie than either Joseph or Belfour right now (besides that, if we got Belfour I would have to stop cheering for the Oilers. I am not kidding). Though I never really understood why the speculation never heated up around Giguere (and yes, I know it would have taken more than a first round pick - I'm not one of these Oilfansers who asks how come we haven't traded Ty Conklin for Mark Parrish), there weren't really any clearcut, legitimate, non-over-the-hill number ones available.

Yeah, I remember telling either Mike or Chris earlier that we could probably afford to lose a first-round pick to help our team, and while I would have preferred more than Roloson, if we had had, say, him and Jussi at the beginning of the year, I would have been content with the goaltending. Keep in mind, too, that he hasn't actually played that bad this year, just that Fernandez is unreal.

The more interesting thing, I think, will be a follow-up deal. Considering we didn't give up anything on our roster, I wouldn't be incredibly surprised to see someone like Torres or Dvorak + one of our grinder-types or prospects (Winchester is my guess) for a second-line scorer of some ilk. No idea who is available, but as I noted when we signed Murray, we have a terrible bevy of them.

Dave, I'm surprised you're not working an excess defenseman of some kind into that deal.

Mirtle says Mike York is in the outbox on Long Island. I bet Lowe's cooking up an offer right now.

As for "excess defencemen", after watching Calgary's playoff run in '04 I'm not certain there's any such thing.
