Game One against Detroit, next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (?) on CBC of course.
Is that Red Wings time, or Oilers time?Still an afternoon game... weird. Looks like ther'll be a full day of hockey to watch! Woot!
That would be Oilers time, best known as MDT or mountain daylight savings time. Those of us trapped in Onterrible will be watching at 3 pm.
I guess we should just be grateful that the Leafs didn't make the playoffs, the Oilers would be playing alternating Tuesday afternoons. Funny, there's a non-trivial number of Wings fans in SW Ontario, are there not?
Gretzky was supposedly a Wings fan as a kid.
All I've met here so far is a pack of Leafs fans and the occasional closeted Senators fan, generally transplanted Ottawans.
Believe it or not... the reason it's an afternoon game is probably because of U.S. TV. Vancouver and Toronto out, Oh the humanity. I like Montreal over Ottawa by the way. The Habs are sexy, in a geo-political sense.
James: how old are most of the people you met? (You don't have to answer, I'm just curious about demographics.)All the people I work with tend to be older than me, and the Wings fans I know - both of them - are both over 25. (I'm in my early 30s.) I'm wondering if the Wings thing is maybe restricted to "older" types. When I were a kid in Guelph, there weren't no stinking Senators; in fact, there were barely any Oilers either. So most people were Leafs fans, with a mix of Sabres, Wings, Habs, and Islanders (the latter probably bandwagoners, since this would have been the late 70s / early 80s).
The only Detroit fans I know are both a generation older than me (ie. boomers) as well as from London or similar- what you'd expect to be real Wing territory. That said, you have to think that if Howe and co. could draw an audience then, Stevie Y and co. could draw one now.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were a number of Wings fans in SO Ont. I mean if you were a kid of around say 10 years old when Yzerman was the man outside of Jayne and Mario...this was also a time when the Leaves were terrible for the most part. And if your Dad didn't make you cheer for TO and you could make your own choice then I don't know why you wouldn't chose the Wings.I grew up in NF and most everyone back here is a Leaves or Habs fan. My Dad was the former but he allowed me to pick my own team.BTW...if you're a fan who follows players instead of teams, ie Gretzky lovers with almost as many jerseys as Brent Ashton...then I hate your guts. I cannot understand people who cheer for players. I loved Larry Walker and I loved Vladdy and Pedro and so on and so forth but I remained an Expos fan.
It seems around here that the closer you are to Michigan the more likely you'll be a Red Wings fan (rather obvious, I guess). For the next two weeks I'll be showering a workmate Red Wing Fan with hisses and boos, even if he asks me a work-related question. Also, I can't grow much a proper playoff beard: the moustache is blonder and more whiskery; and I may get fired if I show up to work looking like a Gardiner Expressway bum. Yet another sacrifice chalked up to the ol' 9 to 5 lifestyle.
Oops! I deleted my comment, I wanted to try it, but then I clicked delete instead of cancel. Oh well. Anyway, I was on the Niagara side of the S.Ont., so my situation was like this:Mom - HabsDad - LeafsSister 1 - HabsSister 2 - LeafsMe - Mah-fuckin' Oilers bitchesAll my friends - Habs, Leafs, Sabres. malarchukI appreciate & respect their dynasties, and the Jean Beliveau song that my mom used to sing, but the Oil have a heart that can't be denied. Being an 80's child, I never liked Gretzky that much either. I liked his hockey sense, but I was a Tikkanen kid all the way.
Tikkanen was always my favorite. Fuckin' guy.
Lest we forget Glenn Anderson, who at times looked more Gretzky than Gretzky, especially in the playoffs. Watch any ESPN classic if you don't believe me (although the whole child support thing will probably keep him out of the Hall of Fame).
the fact that he was a switch hitter probably doesn't help him either;)You had to like Tik..no way around it. Started off as a shadow and by the early 90's he was the heart and soul of the team. Other guys I loved back then were Murphy and MacTavish. As much as Lowe was known as the backbone of the team...I could never really take to him. Lowe always came across as conceited. And the reason why I didn't have much love for Jayne is that I was always a Mess guy.
It appears now that the game will be at 11 AM MDT and 1 PM EDT! Messed up!
Game is now on Friday night!!!Sweetness! Sooner the better I say!Who else is going to devour some hot wings during the game in support of our guys?
Stupid NHL changed the schedule on Wednesday.
