How could such sadness bring me so much joy?

Look at those faces. There are some serious wails going on in that photo — the tortured screams of fans who were close enough to the Cup to see themselves in its reflection, only to have it flit away from their fingertips at the last moment and recede into the night. The silence on some Canes blogs tonight is deafening, though Stormbringer and Cason offer some reflection on the night's events.

Meanwhile, I'm feeling great — and not just because I know a win tonight buys us two days' reprieve from the most pathetic and empty-headed trolls our blog has encountered in the playoff thus far. There's a sense of freedom for the fan whose team has its back against the wall, in knowing that you've done all you can to prepare yourself for the worst; a loss, while tragic, will not only be expected but perhaps even excusable; a win, meanwhile, would rank among mankind's greatest triumphs of the modern age. When you've hit rock bottom, there's nowhere to go but up. Just ask Shania Twain. Oh, wait — did I say "ask"? I meant "punch."

And after you're done punching Shania, take a moment to reflect upon the glory that it has been to cheer for the Oilers this year, to feel such frustration one second and such exultation the next. There's a connection, a mental proximity, between the Oilers and its fans that seems as though it could exist nowhere else, that is uniquely special and ours entirely. And nothing makes me happier right now than the fact that Edmonton will be given one more opportunity to cheer their team on. Seriously. The rest, we can worry about later. All that matter right now is we have one more game to play.

Thanks, Fernando, for single-handedly defeating Cam Ward, the Canes' terrifying powerplay, McGoo's horrendous reffing — and in particular his call on Staios that put us a man down even though Steve was clearly trying to escape Recchi as he tucked Staois's stick under his arm and went sailing through the air — and all that other bullshit that was supposed to be the end of us, and keeping the dream alive.

Thanks.

There's only one call refs are NOT willing to make in these playoffs: diving. Just one such penalty every 5 games or so would go a long way toward discouraging the practice.

PS: GOILERS!

Really don't think it was Mcgoo making the dumb ass calls. It was that tool Devorsky.. fuck he blows the whistle with wild abandon at perceived penalties. It was not just the Oilers he was fucking both teams. The only time he should blown it was when Jussi had the puck under his pads. Because from he was he could not see that puck if his life depended on it.

He reminded me of litle kids with the cowboy hats with the whistle just blowing it to make himself heard.

It was brutal. Brightside the Oilers were not to denied

Wow. Those women look like they came straight out of an Israeli air-raid in Palestine. I bet the girl with the Eric Staal jersey in the middle there is his sister-wife.

Anyone else notice that The Acid Queen moderates her comments section? A real fighter, that one, only letting through comments that she pre-approves.

Well, Abba songs have to be good for something, don;t they?

How are those Cane blogs? I really only read AQs. She might be on the other side, but I like her grit. Are any others worthy of respect, or conversely mockery?

To be fair, our own fan reaction wasn't much better.

I think AQ has snapped, I commented on her last post, nothing to dramatic just that the refs did a horrble job and they had to come back to Perogie ville for another night. Wiped clean. Oh well cue Joey... gotta say they did better with the anthems last night...

My reaction was great. Scared the hell out of my 7 month old, grabbed my flag, and went for a run to the Macs near the house. I don't even live in Edmonton :P

Thanks for sending the Troll Brigade to the Virtual 'Cue Shack, Chris. Really appreciate it.

Good thing I put the commentbox on "moderate" before going to work last night.

All I did was link to your site, AQ. BoA has done that since Game 1 and you haven't said peep, so please. Don't try to blame me for the actions of strangers.

I was being sarcastic, mi hombre. Trust me, if I was really upset your inbox would have imploded by now. ;)

Hey... just so you know. I have a post up.

If you want a reason for my "deafening silence", it's that I didn't get home from the game until 3 in the morning, and I had to be at work at 8 this morning. I didn't really have time to write.

I apologize profusely.

Ohh... You posted at 11:30pm ? and you're talking about "deafening silence" over here? I've given you my reason for the non-instantaneous post. As for the Acid Queen, I think she was working.

Beg our pardon.

Hey D-Lee, sorry — didn't mean any offense by it. And for some reason this blog time-stamps everything for MT; I posted once I got home from work around 1:30 a.m. Anyhow, doesn't matter.

I found it "deafeningly silent" at the 850 buzz blog. After the first two games, there were tons of commenting Canes fans talking into the wee hours of the morning and kept asking "Where are all of the Oiler fans?" I guess they expected to get harassed like a lot of you say Buffalo did. And they barely paid attention to the Oiler fans who actually did show up.

Then last night a two sentence blog went up and no poster made a comment until this morning.

Personal blogs, like this one, I expect people to have a life outside of hockey now and then.

The guys at 850 The Buzz are toolboxes. Their obsession with that idiotic "beep beep" commercial is a perfect example of this.

I read it from time to time, but it's a really bad blog. People read that thing primarily so they can talk about college basketball, and this "stanley cup thing" is just a diversion in the off season for those people.

Mmmmm... thanks for the tip d-lee. I was ostracized for asking why people were discussing baseball in a hockey thread. If you want to talk baseball, it's in the post below me (or so I thought).

I just thought that the links that you guys put on the side of your blogs are those that you approve of, and most Canes fans have 850 on it.

Still figuring out blogger world...

That's nothing. I am banned from even calling in to the Aftermath (850theBuzz's lame-ass postgame show), because I posted in my blog about what a toolbag their program director is, how he was a huge Canes-basher for their first six years in North Carolina, and how he bashed Steve Chiasson (and the people mourning his passing) left right and center on the day he died.

Adam Gold and company don't like hearing the truth.

I put the comment section on moderate before I went to work so that the Troll Brigade wouldn't run wild while I was gone for 12 hours.

Total number of comments I toasted after I got home? One--from a Canes fan.

Lies! One question... before you went to work did you get the feeling that your beloved Canes were going to lose? Or was it just standard practice. I don't like the idea of moderating a blog/site whose main objective of letting fans vent/praise the fortunes of their teams. Personally I think it's gay ass shit and I'm sure the boys here at cio never do that. Right???

Meh. I have no problems deleting really stupid comments.

Both Penalty Killer and AQ (I think) got a few really, really nasty posts from "Red" not too long ago. Throwing the terms "hillbilly", "rednecks" and everything else out there randomly. I noticed that as soon as that had happened PK put his on moderated. I don't blame him.
