From the Streets

Monsieur Cosh has posted the photos from the first ever Oilogosphere Hockey Classic, a puddle-filled, awesome-jersied, groin-grabbingly good time (there were no photos of groin grabbing, sadly, as first-rate baggings were quite rare, considering the use of an orange hockey ball and the complete lack of protective cups).

Though yours truly potted a few, mostly Smythian, goals, the real star of the game had to be TB Player, who was scoring like he got paid to do so. Grabia did get a few as well, though was hampered by his need to not move quickly for vast stretches of time. Clearly, if we are going to step up a competitive notch, we are going to need more line changes.

In any case, it was a solid blast, even if I can't raise my arms much above my head today, and I want to thank everyone who came out to play: times like this remind me why I fell in love with hockey in the first place. For others: we'll be doing it again soon, and you should be involved. Keep your eyes peeled for announcements, or just e-mail, and we'll put you on the list we've set up.

Also: GOILERS!

Aw, hell. I miss home.

One of the great things about Edmonton is that the clothes in the pictures could actually be worn to corporate board meetings here.

Is that a Ron Francis jersey that Grabia's wearing?

Andy Grabia said...

That's not me. I'm wearing the Laraque jersey. I haven't worn my Whalers jersey since the finals, AQ. I can't cheer for them anymore. Breaks my heart a bit, as Ronnie Franchise is my 2nd favorite player ever.

I want to know who's who in the picture! Let us know what your blog/comment name is in the Oilogosphere and point yourself out in the pic, if you could ever be so gracious.

Is that a Mikhnov jeresy? Fuck!

PS: You guys need more girls next time.

'tis a Mikhnov jersey indeed. It's garnered quite a reaction recently. A nice change from the "What the hell kind of shirt is that?" reactions that I used to get.

On a semi-related note, in this picture, Grabia's saying "Excuse me while I go masturbate." Dave sure called the homoerticism.

Looks like you guys had a great time.

So friggin jealous!

Thanks for the update and a shout out to CC for taking the photos. What a great group! The Laraque I see here is better than the real deal, seems to be around the puck.

Wonderful article and a great day. I love this town.

Next time there should be sponsors so you guys can afford special jerseys to sell on the day... and girls.

Do you mean we need more girls to play, or that we need to sell girls on the day? I'm for either, really.

Two girls played, and three watched. More are always welcome.

I'm at the far left standing... blue jersey w/ yellow shoulders/sleeves. I was in net most of the game after we got some pads that fit. Got thoroughly frozen after flopping around in the water a few times, but I'd do it again dammit.

Great pics.

Looks like a great time.

chris! when are we going to have a T.O. version? Or are there enough of us?

I liked the look of young #27 - always around the puck, er, orange ball.

Depending on where/when, I might be convinced to do a TO version (I live in Waterloo).

Except I long ago broke my last stick; the little actual hockey I've played in the last decade or so has all been with borrowed sticks.

Might be able to rouse up a few other semi-local types too, assuming they don't read this themselves and pipe up.

I'm in the Canada jersey and the oh-so-sexy toque with ears.

Great times, guys. Thanks again for setting it up (and set another one up soon! :))

I'm in Kitchener and would consider it too.

Looks like a lot of fun. Great idea, guys!

i guess that i'm the ron francis-looking guy. it's my old Whitey Houston jersey from the GPHL (Whitey Housteon—W.H. Get it? GET IT?) yeah, i think i'm always overlooked like old ronnie too...

Remember, in Flickr you can click on a photo almost anytime (even in a slideshow) to get to its main page and then hit the "All Sizes" button to see it at larger sizes. Everybody's welcome to save them locally, use them as wallpaper, or make prints (you could certainly go as high as 8x10 with the good ones).

Amazing photos! Makes me feel like I was there.

Or is it the screaming pain in every "muscle" in my body...

Well, good game.

I dunno. I just woke up when I wrote that and I still don't get what it meant.

I'm in the Kitchener-Waterloo - Toronto area as well, and if I weren't moving to Taiwan on Friday, I'd be there in any weather with all kinds of equipment.

So who wants to play on Tuesday?
