Where Eagles dare

Great post by Lowetide today, detailing the infamous after-hours scuffle between goaltender Terry Sawchuk and Rangers teammate Ron Stewart that resulted in a lacerated liver and Sawchuk's death in May 1970 at the age of 40.

The story is appropriately timed, as everyone's favourite mummy-husk Ed Belfour managed to once again drag his dead-eyed countenance into the limelight in an non-goaltending-related incident over the weekend, as he did some scuffling of his own with teammates and bouncers at a New York hotel nightclub after he allegedly refused to leave the premises. Fellow Panthers goalie Alex Auld was hurt in an ensuing fray with Belfour in the hotel lobby, which culminated in Auld receiving an unspecified number of stitches above his left eye.

Belfour insists there was no alcohol involved in the rousing bout of "horseplay" and that Auld simply slipped on some water he spilled and hit his head on the marble floor. The victim of Belfour's good-timery, however, is suspiciously silent on the matter. The Panthers have called the incident a "personal matter" and will deal with it internally, and one gets the feeling that if this was all part of Belfour's master plan to get more starts, it may have backfired. Still, it's good to see Rich Uncle Skeleton is making friends down there in Florida.

Wow, Belfour is both a bit of a drinker and now, apparently, an abusive husband (er, goaltending partner). Auld slipped on some water, into a doorknob, down the stairs.

Also, TB: awesome.

What's a 40+ year old doing at a night-club anyhow?
