Calling all millionaires!

Edmonton (7-7-1) at
Columbus (5-7-1)
5 p.m. MT
Sportsnet, CHED

Not a lot of time to post today, so let me just say this: If we can't beat the Columbus Blue Jackets, then what's left? WHAT'S LEFT?

This is officially an important game. Brad Winchester cannot be the best Oiler again tonight; it's time for our millionaires to put down their ruby-studded walking canes and octopus-and-melon-ceviche amuse bouches and earn their keep with some goddamned top-shelf hockey. We can't lose to the Blue Jackets. We just... can't.

It's also time for MacT to settle down the lines and let these guys find some confidence. Hemsky and Sykora can make out all they want on the power play. Even strength, it should be 94-10-83 all the way.

We know this team is solid, and we know they can win. Hopefully, tonight marks the beginning of a major reversal of fortune.

Hey Edmonton fans- found your site via Deadspin, i think.

I write for the Blue Jackets blog "The Jacket Times" at jackettimes.blogspot.com

I think the Oil has the edge tonight, but we're coming off an important motivational win in St. Louis. It should be a good contest, both teams really need the W.

Best of luck from your Columbus foes this evening!

Is that what they eat in Toronto now? Here I thought it was all Tim Hortons and peameal bacon.

The crazy thing is how close Columbus' record will be to the Oilers if the Jackets win tonight...

Losing to Columbus would be the equivalent to losing to St. Louis (whom we play on Sunday). Let's hope the boys show up for both games. These are must wins. MUST!!

Here's a thought regarding Sykora: instead of wasting his chemistry with Hemsky on point blasts, put him down low on the cycle, and see what kind of magic can be made.

Ahhh... now that's what I, sirs, am talking about.

Good game, from the sounds of it. Actually listened to it over the Columbus radio feed at NHL.com — because I'm LOCO like that — and I have to say I like the Jackets' radio tandem quite a bit. Unlike Rod and Morley, they were fair, observant and actually aware of what was happening on a fairly regular basis. Good show, gents.

To be honest, I was expecting a few more commercials for Dr. Phineas McGuggin's Revitalization Tonic and other such midwestian cliches, but sadly, it was mostly just the same commercial for Visa Check Cards over and over, calling a fictional game in which the Jackets were up 3-0 in the first. I imagine that's annoying to regular listeners.

Of course, it was nowhere near as ear-shreddingly retarded as the "Well, son, you mother and I have decided to move to Alberta!" Oilers promo spot that I DO NOT MISS IN THE LEAST. Someone please tell me CHED doesn't play it anymore.

Anyhow, OILERS WIN! For only the second time in the last eight games! I almost forgot what it felt like!

And welcome to the Oilogosphere, Tyler! I like your site.

Oilers and winning? Shocking!

What about them Flames...or more precisely, how about that Kipper?

Good night for Alberta, bad night for the Prongs. It appears he's persona non grata on Alberta soil.

I'm really struggling with my positive feelings towards the Flames right now. I think I need to hire Neil Sheehy to drop an upper-decker in my toilet just to restore the natural order of my soul.

Can I just say how much I dislike this recent trend towards referring to players by their numbers rather than names. I can barely keep the association between name and face right in my mind, nevermind number.

Back in my day, it was team first. We would just say: "Did you see that pass by Oiler to Oiler? It was unbelievable."

Then positions started to creep in: "What a shot by Left Wing Oiler!".

Then it was names. And now numbers.

Sigh.

I blame Dennis at IOF for the numbers thing. And I agree.

After the St. Louis loss I have something positive to say:

WINCHESTER VINDICATED!

Upperdecker...Priceless.

No talk about beating the Nordiques last night and Smytty's run-in with Charlie eh?

I'll blame blogger, since that's the most comfortable (and likely) place to put the blame.
