Seconded. Puck mover who can play top three.

Then a tough winger and veteran depth D-man at the deadline.

Lots of things wrong tonight. Outside of Smith and Smyth, not one guy had what I'd call a passable performance...

"Then a tough winger and veteran depth D-man at the deadline."

I really hate this sort of logic. While players may be easier to acquire at the deadline, if you need a defenceman now, why wait until March when your team could be out of the running? Go get what you need as soon as you realize you need it (and other teams are willing to make it available.) Often there are those who are willing to give it up (like say, Thornton last year).

Paul: I agree that we shouldn't wait until the deadline on the puck-moving defenseman. That is a NOW need.

A power winger and a depth d-man though...we can get away without them for now. However, they'd be invaluable for the stretch run and the playoffs.

It sucks, guys, but I think we're SOL on a d-man for the long haul.

You have to wait until deadline for a team (or teams) to throw in the towel on their season. No one's willing to move a player this early. You have to wait until there's a few teams that are guaranteed of not making the playoffs who are then willing to shuffle their players. Even Chicago isn't that desparate yet (you fire the coach first).

Advice for MacT: Roli is not God. When he's off his game, get 'em outta there fast. He shouldn't have started the second period. He falls apart so easily if a couple of early shots get him razzled. ...

This one had shitcanning written all over it. The Coil are world renowned for Coiling it up right after the big emotional bed shitting they did last game. Fortunately my internet sports book is not as astute of a student of this team as I am, so even in tears I was able to make money.

No one on this board really wants to hear it, and I promise I take no pleasure in writing it but the history is clear, fasten seat belts for the December slide.

Anyone want to Over/Under the first "Fire MacTavishs` ass" comment that the present situation will generate? 02DEC2006.

PS-One last thought, kindly spare us the K-Lowe Kool-Aid that goes something like "you gotta wait till the right deal, blah, blah." We need defense NOW!!! Pay the price and stop the bleeding before we see a repeat of the disaster that was almost last year (playoff run excepted, of course).

The Oilers are in a position where they have a ton of prospects that are coming up and being completely blocked by the fact that all the guys actually in the lineup are young. I expect hemsky, lupul and Horcoff to be Oilers for the longterm, and as such, Lowe has the leeway to deal Mikhnov, Pouliot, Schremp etc for defencemen (obviously not all of them, but you get the idea.)

Edmonton isn't in a position like Colorado where they have top 6 forwards leaving max exodus-style and have room to throw these guys onto the top lines, and Petersen, Winchester and Thoresen clearly have the bottom line locked up, so why wait on these guys until they're 26 and no longer considered prospects (Jani Rita anyone?) If you're going to ever deal them, now is the time.
