Thumbs up!

Well, it looks like the Oilers' ego isn't the only fragile thing on this team. As if getting shut out by Fredrik Norrena the friggin' Columbus Blue Jackets to put our two worst games of the year back to back before heading out into a hostile three-game road stretch wasn't bad enough, we now have to pull out of this nosedive with our most consistent forward and strongest leader wearing eating complimentary Pizza 73 slices in the press box.

In case you haven't heard by now, Ryan Smyth fractured his thumb on this tumble into the boards last night, and is now out for an undetermined length of time. This is, of course, is fairly bad news for a squad already missing Hemsky and Moreau. I know we've been talking about this team's offensive depth since training camp, but unless Horcoff, Pisani and Stoll suddenly start earning their raises, we're in for a rough couple weeks.

The Oilers are teetering on the edge of a prolonged slump that historical precedence dictates MacT will have no idea how to pull them out of. Can the players talk themselves back from the ledge over this upcoming week? Someone will has to. Now would be a good time for an unlikely hero to show up.

AND if all this wasn't bad enough, now the kids at IOF are saying the Sportsnet crew thinks Lowe is trying to make a move for Nick Boynton and/or Eric Brewer to bolster our blue line. This is not the help I had in mind. Boynton is overpaid and hurt, and Brewer is, well... what could he possibly have that we didn't already see? Bringing back a failed Oiler for another go-round couldn't possibly be a good idea. Besides, they're both too young, in my opinion; this team needs a veteran presence to help stabilize the back end. If we absolutely must go under-30, they'd better have a lot more upside than these two bums.

Oh, also, MacT only dressed five blueliners last night, sitting Smid and Hejda for reasons unknown to me. To fill the void, Toby Petersen apparently took some shifts on defence last night. Not that we're in a state of emergency or anything.

Ugh. I should have stayed in bed this morning.

Just to let you know Smid played 18:51 last night.

thanks for the correction; didn't see him the first time I scanned the shift chart. Petersen's assignment is even stranger with six D dressed. Greene only played 10:51 last night; I guess he got benched?

And to think, Lowe turned down LA's offer of Visnovsky and Frolov for Pronger. I wonder if he regrets it more now than he will in 3 years when he botches all those draft picks anaheim gave him?

Smyth = broken thumb crashing into boards
Oiler fans = broken leg jumping off bandwagon

That's right, jackass! I'm "jumping off the bandwagon" by expressing my concerns about the Oilers. God forbid I should feel disheartened by my team's play once in a while. Back to Calpuck with you.

And Paul, I never heard that trade rumour. Seems like a much better deal than Anaheim, and I can't see Lowe turning those two down in favour Smid and Lupul, while also bolstering an already strong Western team. If he did, though, shame on him.

You can still be a devoted fan while expressing concerns. The bandwagon does not exist in Edmonton. We are lifers in this city and for this team, no matter what.

Tough times indeed,

I just read that the oilers have recalled Mikhnov to replace Smyth on the roster. I wonder why they wouldn't give Schremp a shot given his AHL numbers, and the absence of skill players. Also, the skillset Schremp brings would be a great addition to the lacklustre powerplay, possibly providing some much needed offense to help get through these injuries. Not that Mikhnow has played poorly, but clearly goal scoring will be a problem with Smyth and Hemsky out. Mikhnov is much better suited in a 3rd or 4th line role
at this point, and right now the oilers are icing about nine 3rd or 4th line caliber players. -Matt

Scarlett, you`re right, we are lifers. Serving time with the Coilers for crimes we didn`t commit...

Seriously, calling up Miknov? Didn`t he just get send down b/c he`s a pylon?

Shremp, Shremp, Shremp!!! Can`t be worse and might just spark some type of emotional response from these sleepwalkers.

I apologize. I chose my words poorly. This is really what I meant.

Look a pylon is good enough for any forward, or even a coat rack. Desperate times calls for desperate measures. I'm sure Oilers management will start abducting low key forwards from other teams and threaten them into playing for the team mafia-style.

Chris! As hard as it is to believe, I have it from two different sources not named Stauffer this weekend. That was the offer LA put on the table. Lowe turned down the Kings for the draft picks. I was as shocked to hear it as you.

Case,
You're right. Bad analogy. Here's one I found esp. for you:
