Can you FEEL it?

Hey hey, you dinks! One more sleep and it's finally here, the day that Oilers fans and players alike have been waiting for all year: the big fancy goddamned trade deadline.

Granted, it means a little less now that the Oilers are halfway through their long spiral into the centre of the great yawning toilet bowl that has been this defensively crippled season. And sure, most of the big trades seem to have happened already. But still: deadlines! Exciting.

The NHL-calibre defencemen have been whizzing through the air like stray bullets for the past few days now — Shane O'Brien, Alexei Zhitnik, Braydon Coburn, Craig Rivet, Josh Gorges, Brent Sopel, Lasse Kukkonen — and Lowe has thus far managed to catch nary a one. By now we're all humble enough to realize that the calvary is, in fact, not coming, and the Oilers are more than one or two pieces away from a return to the playoffs. Clearly, there isn't one big trade that's going to solve all our problems.

Still, things are going to happen. Sykora's gone for sure. Nedved's there for whoever wants him. Maybe Torres and/or Lupul, too. Winchester probably already has his bags packed. Smith and Smyth? My brain won't even let me start to consider their departures as a possibility. But no matter what, this team will come out the other side of the 3 p.m. ET deadline with some adjustments, a different look no matter what. Hopefully, we don't get taken in the process. One fleecing in a year is more enough for me, thanks.

Call me eternally hopeful, but I think we're going to see something big out of Edmonton tomorrow. The enthusiasm with which the Flyers seem to be blowing up their team is encouraging, and one has to wonder whether the recent acquistions of Zhitnik, Kukkonen and Parent have at all loosened Philadelphia's death grip on Pitkanen. Given current events, a some sort of deal like Pitkanen for Green, Torres/Lupul, a prospect and Anaheim's first-rounder doesn't seem to be as much of a pipe dream as it did a week ago. Does it?

Whether we even want to go that route, I'm not even sure. The Hawks are selling. So are the Kings. But maybe we are as well. I'm keen to find out. Sounds like Mikey will have things covered (IN OIL, SO TO SPEAK) round these parts tomorrow, and I'm hosting a live blog of the trade deadline over at the National Post's website that will feature Mark Spector and a few other sports writers' thoughts on all the happenings, or, more likely, the lack thereof. Check it out here starting at 10 a.m. tomorrow if you like words. And PARTYING.

I will use the mental image of Kevin Lowe catching a stray defenceman bullet in the shoulder, spinning him like Matt Greene as he watches a Sedin brother whizz by him, to get to sleep when I'm having bad dreams.

If we can get Pitkanen by surrendering future value equal or less to Pitkanen's, we should do it. Now explain why such a deal would make any sense at all from fellow-non-playoff team Philly's perspective?

Because Bobby Clarke is still around, lurking in the shadows.

Zhitnik got traded for Coburn, which pisses me off even more.

Sykora is a prime candidate to be traded. Sure.

But what could we get for Jason Smith? Staios?

Looking around at these deadline deals, they may have some great trade value, especially with a Stanley Cup Finals still somewhat fresh in most GMs' memories.

I love 'em, but they've lost a step. What can I say: it's the salary cap era.

memo to kevin lowe: you realize that the trade deadline is in about 5 minutes, you've done jack shit so far, and the oilers (as a collective unit) suck white ass?

fuck, you'd better not have slept through your damn alarm clock today.

15 minutes after the deadline and re-reading this post is quite depressing. It's like reading a letter from 1914 penned by a chipper young Tommy who's off to the Somme, confident that he'll be back home in time for Christmas. Our knowledge of what happened next brings a deep pathos to the proceedings.

wow. as an oilers fan, i'd say that "bitter disappointment" is the only sentiment i have right now.

this team has been a bullshit pretender all season long with glaring deficiencies, a bunch of players who ALL could have made them better moved to OTHER teams today, and we did... nothing.

yay. fucking yay.

So apparently the plan is to hide under some coats and hope everything works out? Has Lowe been attending Messier parties all weekend or something?

Does anyone think we fleeced Milbury, like we always do ?

Please no, Smytty!!
