Some more mind-thoughts

An Oilers fan, right, during the happier times of last June.

Listening to 630 CHED's coverage of the press conference, Kevin Lowe made a weird hint about talking to Ryan Smyth about "maybe coming back one day" like Lowe did himself as an Oiler.

Then he said "I hope don't get in trouble for that...," pointing out that he was vague enough in talking about what capacity Smyth would ever come back.
I can't see why the Oilers wouldn't make an offer July 1, but it's still a question of how serious of an offer it could be (especially since negotiations have already failed).

Then again, what if Ryan Smyth scores zero points in a first round exit for the Islanders? Does his value diminish slightly among the annual glut of new CBA UFAs along the likes of Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya? I'm just blathering (and definitely in denial), but it's something to think about. There's lots of "ifs," far too many for this trade to be much of a consolation right now.

Either way, the league should do something about rental players going back to their original team so we can avoid any denial/confusion the next time we trade away a player: call it the Mark Recchi rule or whatever.

we are also overlooking the Charles Wang factor.

here's hoping Chuck's got his freak setting on 11, and smytty'll be back here on the next Greyhound...

No, Smyth's value will not go down, even with a 0 point first round exit. It may go up, but I doubt it can go a whole lot higher anyway.

I don't think he's coming back anyway.

I kind of doubt he's coming back too. But I also doubt he's going to sign with the Islanders either. Or if he does it's only after thouroughly testing the Free Agent waters.

Wonder when the next time we'll see an Oiler raise the cup will be.

I think iit's great that they are sporting the same unis they wore the last time they sold off their assets for the prospect of future success. How did that work out, anyway?

You speak truth, littlefury.

At least we have matching pants, gloves, and helmets with our retro jerseys. Learn from it, Buffalo!

I wonder how much Kevin Lowe will regret not taking part in the on-ice festivities as years go by.

Hey CIO guys, how long before we infuriate people with demands that Schremp be promoted to the Oilers 1st line? Is tomorrow too soon?

Yes, he'll likely offer Smyth a 65 year/$1 billion deal.

I suggest we put David Oliver on the first line.

Then again, Vladimir Vujtek could "break out."

it really IS the early 90's all over again, as the retro-jersey-wearing oilers are currently losing 1-0 to the winnipeg jets.

so. fucking. angry.

Where exactly is Gene P doing his interview with KLowe? Looks like they intentionally tried to make it look like a non-descript bunker so that enraged Oiler fans don't know where to find him.

I'm surprised he didn't just drop off an audio tape with Al Jazeera.

Anyone know why Sykora is still an Oiler? If we're sellers, he seems to be the first guy you'd trade.

mike w said...

Because Sykora wants to stay (no small thing) and will come reasonably priced for a guy with 49 points.

Nice to see the Oilers come out flying. Yikes.

Oh man, 0-3 Phoenix. Fuckin' PHOENIX. It's like the entire team has just given up.

With any luck. Never.

Does Sykora really want to stay Mike? Maybe he thinks he'll be put back on a line with Hemmer?

Hard to blame them. Business or not I'm next to tears and I've never even met him.

I didn't see the game, did the team really play that badly?

I'm not suprised.

Conspiracy theory : The roughly $1MM Lowe saves by not paying Smyth whats left of this season will go right back to him when the oilers add another $250K per year to the deal they offer him on July 1st.

Or something.

I am still crying ..in disbelief. I can only hope he resigns with the Oil, but I doubt it. It is not right, as I used to luv lowe and now I want him gone.

That might be the only thing about all of this that could possibly make me any remote sort of happy.
