Oilers: "We have to play AGAIN?"

Edmonton Oilers at L.A. Kings
8:30 pm Mountain, TV: PPV

Just trying to make sense of the dog's breakfast that is the current Oilers lineup. Every time the game's been on, and I've managed to lift my head from all of the crying fits, I've only ever noticed Toby Petersen carrying the puck.

Toby Petersen at even strength, Toby Petersen on the power play, Toby Petersen on defence, Toby Petersen folding towels with Joey Moss in the locker room, Toby this, Toby that... Arrgh! I'm actually starting to think that this Toby Petersen "person" is actually the devil, mocking me for even watching the pointless last quarter of the season. No wonder I rake the keyboard at night, leaving drunken comments on this blog.

Basically half of the team is injured or has the flu, not including the two players we traded for prospects, so there's no mystery behind this 7-game skid. Most fans, and possibly the Oilers themselves, are openly hoping for the Oilers to lose so that the team has a shot at the 5th pick in next June's draft (Patrick Kane? Kyle Turris?). So with that in mind: anyone shelling out $11.95 for tonight's PPV matchup against the Kings?

Some silver lining: Matt Greene and MA Pouliot are playing well, and I really like this Zach Stortini fellow. Little worried that Patrick Thoresen will disappear back to Norway if he doesn't pot a goal by season's end, but I've liked his hustle all season long. Anyway, I have NHL Centre Ice, so it looks like I'll be watching the game like a total dupe.

GOILERS!

Forget number five. If we even get down that low, we should package one of our other number one picks to get down to number two and draft this Cherepanov fellow, who the Flyers are inexplicably uninterested in despite the fact he keeps scoring more than people with names like Malkin and Bure (and not the bad one). That's a reason to get excited again, even if it's only in four months' time.

Man, six guys left from that lineup and two of them are Matt Greene and Toby Peterson.

Greene was awful in the last game I saw but if he is playing well, great. Then they can package him off to a team who likes those big slow guys (again Philly?).

Washington is really shooting for that 6th draft pick, so Edmonton had better start losing big(ger) if they want to edge them out.

no worries about the losing. what is our biggest losing streak? I called a record breaker after smyth was traded.

am I allowed to say that? I won't get banned or anything.

I think our longest losing streak is 11 games. Anyone care to verify that?

Tagline:

"Toby Matters"

Over/under on buys for tonight's PPV game: 387.

I'll take the under.

Prediction: 4-2 Oilers, Pisani with a pair, Pouliot 1G, 2A. Lupul goes pointless.

Dave, YOU ARE BANNED.

Washington lost again tonight. Now instead of Battle of Alberta, it's battle to the bottom.

Oilers PPV is selling this as an exciting glimpse of young players making the most of their opportunities in the big leagues.

Cue: quick 2-0 lead for LA.

Oh joy.

A five-minute, mid-period interview with Patrick LaForge, shilling more season tickets.

The Toebs shorthanded

Any takers for them tickets? Remember that Edmonton is stuffed with prospects that might have a chance to possibly do something maybe even positive for the team... next year...

Does anyone remember when they were in the hunt for the playoffs and Lowe couldve signed a d-man? Could've?

Prediction: 9-5 LA in a contest to see who's defense and goaltending is more porous. LA snaps its 5 game losing streak and Edmonton pulls its streak to within one of the caps.

Things pimped within 10 minutes of this $11.95 broadcast: season tickets, Oil King tickets, Ford "Oil Crusher" car at some dealership, and the cherry on top: a new arena.

LaForge: "People are always asking me 'when are you getting a new building?'"

Oh, are they? I imagine it was more like "what the fuck are you guys doing to this team?" but nevermind.

Interestingly, LaForge talks about the arena as if it was entirely Mayor Mandell's idea.

Oh, and now they have another sales pitch for season ticket renewals. This feels like a telethon.

This team is really making hard for me to be a fan right now...

I told you Petersen was the devil.

Who needs Smyth when you've got PETERSEN! WOOO! YEAAAHHH!! yeaahhaahhaaaaaaaaaaaIjustwanttodie

If I am ever presented with definitive proof that the Kings actually offered Frolov plus Visnovsky for Pronger, I will personally drive to the Oilers office and kick Kevin Lowe's ass.

As a fan, after this season, I'm spent. The frustration is too much to grapple with from so far away. Now I just cry, like Baby Jebus.

Doubtless the remaining players feel about the same. Can we blame them?

Someone needs to compare Toby Peterson's shorthanded points/60 minutes to his powerplay points/60 minutes.

Also: be careful what you bitch for, eh? People were complaining about being unable to have fun while watching the Oilers in November. Buying Oilers PPV has to be considered assisted suicide at this point.

Metaphorically speaking, my head is almost completely inserted into the oven.

Hoo boy, is this a sad sack team! Want me to back that up WITH STATS?

How about this: in 8 games so far, the Oil have been outscored 31 - 6.

joninabox said...

It's pretty sad that most of us are still watching/listening to these games. Granted, I usually read a book at the same time now... Seems too much like wasted time otherwise.

The question I keep asking myself is how did this team go from being 2 D away from being a really good hockey team to a 5 r (and beyond) rebuild? None of the summers signings make any sense. all the timing was 2 - 3. Unfortunately about the time the rebuild will be coming together (we'll need another goalie by then) Hemmers contract will be getting mighty expensive. 1. Fire Kevin Lowe
2.Sign Ryan Smyth.
3 trade quantity for 2 quality D.
and we are back.

Please don't ban me I will honestly get lethal with this plastic cutlery if I have to listen to peoples imaginary UFA signings and evaluations of our return. I'm all alone and teamless.

I haven't watched in a month or two. I'm almost past the point of being sad for these losers. I stopped checking the score when it was 2-1 LA, and then checked ESPN again to see that it ended up as a 5-1 game. My immediate reaction? Laughter and a chorus of "Nice!"

While I do feel sorry for the players (to an extent, they're still making more than a good living), we might as well cheer the 06-07 season goodbye in horribly destructive style, and get the best draft pick we can.

Sweatyo: It wouldn't matter if Edmonton were offered Ovechkin and Semin -- MacTavish would find a way to limit both to 15 goals a piece.

you forgot radek dvorak in the 2006 stanley cup lineup

mike w said...

True. Because I used their lineup from the Finals.

Yet not a critical word about ownership management or coaching staff from any of Edmonton's "journalists."

Barnes is back today.

He is pretty critical.

Rem Murray was the 4th line C, not Toby.

mike w said...

ARRRRRGH. I knew I'd get in trouble with the lineups.

I couldn't remember who exactly played on the fourth line, or third for that matter, and my back issues of the Hockey News weren't helping me: this was from Game 3 lineups posted on HF.

Blame them.

mike w said...

ALSO, I MISS DVORAK.

Thanks, anonymous (man, I haven't said that a whole lot).

June 2006 seems like a decade ago at this point.
