Next up: Kiprusoff for Bertuzzi

Well, it seems the Keenan era in Calgary began in earnest today as TSN reports the Flames have traded mildly ineffective defenceman Andrei Zyuzin to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for ineffective, oft-injured, overpriced and hopelessly washed-up defenceman Adrian Aucoin.

Why — oh god, why — you ask, would Calgary be interested in taking on a fading talent like Aucoin, who has scored a paltry six goals and 22 points while going minus-35 in 92 games over two seasons in Chicago, all the while commanding a spit-take-worthy $4-million a season? TSN has your answer:

The Flames were in the market for a defenceman and zeroed in on Aucoin, who has a history with new Calgary coach Mike Keenan. In 1998-99, Aucoin scored 18 of his 23 goals on the powerplay for Keenan's Vancouver Canucks.
Ahh. Good stuff. I'll just leave it at that, as I'm sure certain Calgary fans will be more than happy to drop by today and explain in the comments why this trade is acgtually the smarrtest thing THE FALMES hve evar dun becasue KENNUN is a genious. I assume it has something to do with the Oilers sucking shit.

How many defencemen is that now?
Remember when the Flames used, like, two dozen defencemen in the 04 playoffs. Is anyone keeping track of how many rearguards D Sutter has shipped in and out of Calgary? Geez.
Mind you, Brian Sutter used seven goalies in one season as Flames coach.

They seem to let go of defencemen for the hell of it. Tell me again what exactly was wrong with, for instance, Commodore, Lydman and Ference?

Oh yeah, they're Stanley Cup Finals-tested - best to get rid of them and bring in the likes of Brad Stuart and Adrian Aucoin.

I get shivers just thinking about how much fun it's going to be to watch Calgary implode under Keenan's regime.

Zyuzin was worse than mildly ineffective I'm afraid.

That said, the Aucoin deal is a big gamble. If he's healthy, he'll contribute. That's a big IF these days though.

I wouldn't have taken anyone for Zyuzin, but Aucoin will do. That said, this continuing "the devil you know" bullshit is starting to make me tired.

Better get used to it. Between Sutter and Keenan, the Flames have cornered that market.

Despite all predictions, the Battle of Alberta (2007-2008 ed.) is in fact shaping up to be a battle.

A battle for fourth in the Northwest, mind you, but a battle nevertheless.

Jesus. Predators trade Tomas Vokoun to the Panthers for a first-rounder and two seconds, TSN reports.

Man, I sure hope the Oilers get a piece of that Nashville fire sale.

mike w said...

No kidding. Think they'll throw in some office equipment with Radulov?

Hold the phone. That fire sale is looking mighty stupid now, no?

What the hell is going on.

Yeah, no kidding. I'm chasing that story on the Post site right now.

Also, Kings take Thomas Hickey No. 4 ??? My god, will Voracek actually be available at 6?

Gagner it is.

Cherepanov could be ours?

Nope, the Oilers did their usual oddball thing.

Although that 6'4" 225 lb WHL tough ass shit is nice when you think of our blueline, did we just draft another Matt Greene 15th overall?

21st pick is Riley Nash, a guy not slated to be picked in the top 30 by all of the rankings.

Pardon the mental image, but it's balls out time for Lowe.

What were the details of the Oilers' trade for the 21st pick?

30th and 36th going the other way

Wasn't one of those picks the bonus second rounder from Anaheim winning the Cup?

I can't remember.

so maybe aucoin's best days are over but this is nothing but a net plus for the flames in my opinion. id much rather have our d than the smid-greene-grebeshkov-roy-syvret-young lineup of the rexall COILERS next year lol

Mike W, that's next year's first rounder. The second rounder from Anahiem will be number 60 or so, that was originally part of the trade. The bonus from them making the finals is their first in 08.
