Farewell, Jussi

Looks like Jussi Markkanen has gone off to greener pastures, signing with Jokerit of Helsinki in his native Finland. After another disappointing season in 2006-07, the writing was on the wall for Markkanen and his .886 SVP, but we should never forget Dr. Cool's performance in the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, where special teams and ill-advised pinches from Oilers defenceman were the real reasons why the Oil fell short of winning the Cup.

As one of Kevin Lowe's few CinO-approved acquisitions this off-season, signing L.A. goaltender Mathieu Garon should solidify the Oilers in net, especially if Dwyane Roloson starts to show his age, but for now, I offer a tip of the puckhat to ol' Juicy. [Mike tips his puckhat]

Meanwhile, it boggles the mind to think that Ty Conklin is still in the NHL, albeit at a dirt cheap price...

I always liked the Juice.

I hope he is the best goaltender outside the NHL this season.

God, he was amazing that series.

I'll miss the Juice. But Garon is a necessary upgrade.

Um, is there a moruning session with hand holding and "I miss him"?

Holy shit did we ever give the Hurricanes a lot of really good scoring chances.

Also, I think Markkanen ranks up there with guys like Buchberger and (probably soon) Reasoner: entirely necessary that we upgrade the position, but really sad to see them go all the same. If we're going to bother to be nepotistic with former players, I hope we can find a spot for a guy like Juice down the road.

Jordi, I'm not sure I get what you're talking about.

good luck and godspeed, Juicy.

hard not to love the guy, especially his performance in the SCF.

if only it had been his turn in the bench rotation during Game 1 (but i'm not going there)...

Noooooo Markkanen!!! Darn it, if he had only gotten a couple more starts, I'm sure he would've shown (more of) his stuff.

Naturally, this is a move that the Oil will come to regret deeply.

regret: lowe's frequent nightmares while stoned on boiled nyquil and slobbering on his printed-#44 pj's

Sorry, I'm a little shattered here; still having troubles comprehending it.

Markkanen has earned two things, not just in the 2006 Stanley Cup final but from his classy and loyal bearing as an Oiler his entire career. One was another chance to prove he was a legitimate NHL goaltender at this stage in his career, which he couldn't in 2006-07. The other was a classy sendoff regardless of the outcome.

So godspeed, Juice. You're one of the handful of Oilers that nobody could ever say a bad thing about off the ice, and I'm glad he's getting a little love as he heads home.

Nothing but Juice for the Jussi. He deserved to win that Cup. Not a single media guy covering that series gave us a chance after Roli went down. But he held, and if not for Craig Simpson we'd have won. I'm gonna miss him.

Speaking of power-play poobah Craig Simpson, word has it that he's gonzo to the HNIC. Also, expect a job announcement shorty for Mr. Buchberger.
Damn I'm coy.

Aww, that video was one of the saddest things ever. I became a fan during the Cup run and therefore think of Juicy as a god. I knew it was coming but I will miss him terribly.

Elsewhere, the Ducks have one day to match the Penner offer. They won't do it, right?

Could we not talk about Conklin and his new job? It makes me cry.
