Nice!

He's divorced, right?

no, married, but who the hell cares, we need a good year. at least until deadline time. We have to cover souray's LACK of defense. This is a older bergeron really.

Anonymous said...

Is it really 5.5 per over 5 years? If so thats a pretty good signing.

I've wanted Souray all off-season, but I had resigned myself to never getting players through UFA until today!

Souray! Pitkanen! Things are looking up in Oil Country :)

Whoo hoo!

How much money do we have left for a forward now?

He's big, anyway.

Pair him with Greene once in a while.

Er, let's get excited when it's official. Fool me once ...

So they gave him what they wouldn't give Ryan Smyth? Not that I'm a huge Smyth fan but with or without Souray this is a team that's going to have trouble scoring at even-strength.

Maybe they're building a defensive scoring team? Forwards need not apply...

Can he play left wing?

Oh, and I'm quite sure he is divorced.

Chris! said...

Maybe his cat will refuse to move to Edmonton?

Just so you know, he and his ex-wife are reconciled. So he's dating his ex-wife. Cue the drama!

Greg said...

I thought he had reconciled with his ex.

I guess Hemsky is our entire first line. We can't afford any more forwards!

Anonymous said...

Yes, we did offer Souray and Smyth the same contract, but in two totally different situations and outcomes.

Smyth balked at being paid 5.4M per, so it never really was his money to begin with. If we would have held onto Smyth at the deadline we would have been forced to beat Colorado's offer. Remember, "no hometown discount". At the very least we would have had to offer Smytty 6.4 to stay with us. He was gonna become an UFA July 1st come hell or highwater.

Souray at 5.4 or Smyth at 6.4? Guess we'll have to wait till next April to see who earns their contract, stat wise.

Anonymous said...

Way overpaid, but the oilers had to pick up someone. Souray is nowhere near worth 5.5 mil a year. I think that the Bieksa deal last week looks like a steal compared to this one. And to think reghyr is gettin less also???

Steve said...

Combined 2006-2007 NHL +/- for our top five defensemen (i.e. Souray, Pitkanen, Staios, Greene, Smid): -96.

I doubt I have a point, but isn't that a great stat?

no, you're right. we're kinda screwed

Anonymous said...

Stat shmat.

Plus/minus barely means anything, especially when four out of 5 of those D played on awful teams.

Steve said...

I actually agree with the second anonymous - I think our current defense is good enough to take us into the playoffs - or, at least, it's good enough to take a team with respectable forward options into the playoffs.

As near as I can figure, out third pairing is Tarnstrom/Smid. I can certainly live with that.

mike w said...

>Souray at 5.4 or Smyth at 6.4?

Care to elaborate on how you got that number for Smytty?

Smyth could have been signed at $5.5 million, but Lowe's the one that balked (and of course, regretted it later). Still, I like this Souray pick up.

matt said...

I was in a cab in Montreal the day Smyth was traded, asked the African cab driver to repeat what the radio just said and he turned around and asked me in his Congo-accented French why the hell Edmonton and Montreal didn't just swap Souray and Smith straight up, because Edmonton needed defence and Montreal needed grit and goals. And it's kind of like they did. Except we also traded some self-respect for Gagner in the process.

McLea said...

Too bad you can't say the same for your goaltender or forwards.

You're 1/3 of the way there Edmonton. Congratufuckinglations. Maybe Souray and Pitkanen will score 40 a piece for you.

Textbook trolling, folks.

I don't know - I'd rather have Smytty for those bucks.

Souray, Tarnstrom, Pitkanen, Hemsky, Horcoff - lets see Simpson fuck up this PP - christ, four of these guys make their living on it

Paul said...

I'm confused as to why he hates Roloson, who is quite clearly capable of guiding a team with respectable defence and offence to the 8th playoff spot.

2. Be made fun of.

3. Retaliate with sputtering, indignant response.

4. Disappear.

mike w said...

I'd rather have Number 4 if all he's going to do is Number 1.

(the hint is that I could care less for pointless sports tribalism trash talk -- it's not that kind of blog)

mike w said...

And yeah, the money...sigh. I'd take Smyth over Souray anyday. Or hell, even both!

Pleasure Motors said...

Roloson and Garon's combined SV% last year was about .907, or essentially just shy of the top third of the league. Considering 16 teams make it, I would say it's probably fair to call that goaltending that's capable of putting you into the playoffs.

Forward would be nice, though.

Devin said...

"Plus/minus barely means anything, especially when four out of 5 of those D played on awful teams."

Hooray - this year 5 out of 5 of them get to play on an awful team!

It's a mad world where Sheldon Souray makes anywhere close to as much money as Pronger.

Edmonton = fooked.

You will regret this deal.

In other news, it's July! WTF am I doing here?

Darien said...

Souray reports: The fans are great. No mention of the team though.

Montreal seems to be very happy to be rid of him though, so I don't know if the Oil got a helper or a hinderer.

Black Dog said...

As everybody else had noted, if you don't think Roloson's good enough to get a team into the playoffs, you are one or more of the following:
1. dumb

You will also notice that right after I called our defensemen good enough to get into the playoffs, I immediately acknowledged that our forwards weren't. So we don't disagree on that point, much as I might wish we did for the sake of my credibility.

Yeah I was a bit perplexed by the amount of celebration that was going on over this signing, especially when all the habs fans are cheering that he got traded.

Chris! said...

Oh my god, we've been PSYCHED!!!

rickibear said...

At "behind the net" you seee the quality two way forwards he had to play with EV: Koivu, Kovalev, Ryder
Try playing 15:00 Ev with those three. Only -28.

Jordi said...

He is so divorced that I'm wondering if he's stalking me.

He spent most of his time on even strength with Rivet. However his second biggest partner was Markov which came from PP minutes. Souray did juggle with teammates a lot more at even strength, than on the PP (his biggest upside, if he can stay out of the fucking box). Markov at least got to spend over 50% of his minutes with a consistent partner (Komisarek). So really, can you blame him? Well yeah but I think he's been severely underrated. I do believe his production will definitely be lower than last season but I'm hoping we're paying him for more than just crappy +/-.

mike w said...

It occurs to me that with the new salary cap (and a strong Canadian dollar), $5.5 million is really the new $3.5 million.

There, that made me feel better.

At the very least, I think he's neither as good offensively or as bad defensively as his numbers would indicate last year.

As everybody else had noted, if you don't think Roloson's good enough to get a team into the playoffs,

One other person "noted" this. Granted, the way you use "get into the playoffs" seems to suggest that he won't single handedly cripple your team. A small victory I suppose.

You will also notice that right after I called our defensemen good enough to get into the playoffs, I immediately acknowledged that our forwards weren't.

Either your defencemen are good enough to get your team into the playoffs or they aren't. You can't say "our defencemen are would be good enough to get us into the playoffs if our forwards were better." That doesn't make any sense.

Darien said...

Why not? Think of it this way. Scenario 1. You have shit forwards/average forwards but the stellar defense carries the entire team. You make the playoffs.

Scenario 2. You have average defense, average forwards (a little bit of suck) and you squeeze into the 8th playoff spot.

Scenarioo 3. You have average defense and totally crap forwards. You're not making the playoffs. But the defense is good enough for a playoff bound team - they just won't make it because the forwards don't pull their weight.

Unless I'm missing something in your "our defencemen are would be good enough". That was just confusing.

teebeeplayer said...

Is it possible that the Oil could actually have a decent PP this year??

Souray with Stoll or Pitkanen on the point, Hemsky, Horcoff and, I don't know, maybe Shremp up front????

We can always dare to dream.

McLea: Given the Oilers' goalies, I think it's pretty well impossible to conceive of a situation in which, come March, we're saying "Well, the Oilers would have made it into the playoffs if our goaltending had been better". This is true no matter what happens on forward or defense: with a great lineup upfront, we make the playoffs. With a bad lineup upfront, such as a first line that includes Geoff Sanderson, we don't make the playoffs, but it's sure not the goalies' fault. Ergo, our goaltenders are good enough for us to be a playoff team.

The same is true of our defense, in my opinion (although this might be more controversial). Given decent forwards and goaltenders, this defensive corps will get us into the playoffs. Given lousy forwards and/or goalies, this defensive corps doesn't get us into the playoffs, but we don't close the season by saying "Our defense prevented us from getting into the playoffs." No, instead we close the season saying "Why was Kevin Lowe's response to the discovery that Sanderson's not good enough to play on the first line to trade for Tobey Peterson?"

I'm certainly not claiming that Roli is good enough to take the Oilers into the playoffs himself (unless he scores fifty goals. Seriously, a forty goal performance from Roli won't be sufficient). But there isn't a single playoff team, except maybe the Falmes, that suddenly becomes a non-playoff team by replacing its goalie with Roli.

Steve said...

Also:

One other person "noted" this.

Both Pleasure Motors and Paul pointed out you were wrong about Roli before I did. But since counting is so low on your list of deficiencies, I'll let it slide.

The last sentence of my most recent comment was out of line. My apologies, McLea - I was tired and crabby and frustrated that my preferred NHL team is so lousy. But I've had my nap, and I'm okay now.

The Falmes still suck, however.

Maybe MacT will open up a can of whoop ass on Souray and force him to either learn how to play defence effectively, or drag out the rusty lessons in defence that he learned in Pee Wee. Failure to comply may result in his tongue being ripped out ala Harvey the Hound.

On the upside, your power play is going to kick everyone's ass. You just need to get some people who are good at drawing penalties.

Darien said...

"You just need to get some people who are good at drawing penalties."

Where's Lupul and his "your mom/sister/aunt/great grandmother's a horny bitch" taunt when you need him? Oh yeah.

E said...

the man is capable of playing adequate defense, it just doesn't come naturally to him, and it seems to have a wacky inverse correlation with his offensive production. by the end of last season, it was pretty much guaranteed that if he got a goal, he'd finish the night -1 or -2. for no logical reason, given his customary way of scoring.

also, it'd be good if someone out there could think of a way to control his temper a bit. yeah, everybody loves that he's all tough and stands up for his teammates and everything, but it's much less lovable when you realize that it's your power-play specialist who keeps ending up in the box.

Lady_Byng said...

He wasn't traded from Montreal, he was a free agent.
And he won't be traded at the deadline this year as he has a no-trade clause in the 1st 3 years of his contract.
I like this signing.
