Sigh.

The Colorado Avalanche have signed Ryan Smyth to a five-year, $31.25-million deal, TSN reports.

I'm sure Smytty is excited about the prospect of having eight opportunities a year to show Kevin Lowe just how elite a player he really is. And get paid what he's actually worth while doing it.

So.. anyone want to start betting on the W/L Avs:Oil ratio for next season?

I hope he scores a hat trick against us every night.

PS: Sykora to the Penguins.

Of Sportsnet's top 10 free agents, everyone's gone now except Souray and Selanne, neither of whom seem destined to don the blue and copper. Ah, but Lowe no doubt still expects to be busy on the free agent market. Krys Kolanos, call your agent.

Well, we did get Nylander, which was unexpected in these quarters.

We just acquired two ex-Whalers in one day? Why do I get a kick out of that? And is Gordie a UFA?

Notwithstanding 80+ points, this move slightly confuses me. Can we expect to see one of Horcoff or Stoll packaged with one of our innumerable prospect centremen for some kind of one-shot winger in the near future?

The Rangers ARE in cap-hell right now....and we've got two Czechs and could use a one-shot superstar type left winger....

I hope my gut feeling is right and we end up with Jaromir Jagr tomorrow. Wouldn't that kick ass?

Well Jagr does have a man-crush on Hemsky..so it could happen

I don't know if the Rangers want to trade a man who a season ago damn near scored as much as the two guys they just brought in.

15 million for 120-130 points.

8 million for 95-125 points.

Sather can do math right?

Motherfucker. This just...

Aw shit, I'm not even gonna bother. I fucking give up.

Yeah, this Nylander deal is strange to me as well. Not only do we not really need another centre, but isn't he kind of soft for the Oilers?

Also, I might be more excited about his offensive abilities if Nylander wasn't clearly a 60-point player who spiked into the 80s for the two years he played with Jagr.

All in all, a weird move when taken by itself. But considering we just overloaded at centre while becoming weaker on the wing, I think we're correct in assuming there's still at least one big trade coming.

God I hope there's still one big trade coming. (I don't even want to think it's Jagr. That would be too amazing.)

Let's not forget. Smyth was offered a generous contract here and turned it down. That was his choice. Lowe did right thing in trading Smitty at the trade deadline.

At least we can still cheer for him when he wears the red and white.

sigh. good luck Smytty.

You are joking, right? Take a look around the market place, $5.4 million was far from generous. And also stupid, cheap and contradictory when you think of the Staios and Pisani loyalty-based contracts.

Anyway, I actually like the Nylander deal, by the way, especially if it's anywhere in the $2 million range (wishful thinking, perhaps).

One could argue that his 83 points (more than Gomez, Smyth) have been padded by playing with Jagr on the powerplay, but the dude was playing at over a point a game clip last season. Good match for Hemsky. Plus, I liked what I saw when he was with the Rangers. Of course, the knock is that he's 35 and not great defensively.

I just hope, somehow, that he came cheap.

$2mil for Nylander? You're kidding, right? I can't see him signing for less than $4mil.

mike w said...

Sigh. You are right. I was thinking of Toby Petersen or something when I wrote that.

mike w said...

Have I told you how happy I am that Lupul was traded?

James L. said...

Toby Petersen??? Didn't you hear that Lowe signed him yesterday for 6 years at $2.45mil/year to reward his loyalty? With Lupul gone, there was a pressing need for a player of his calibre.

At that price, securing the future of the Oilers was a bargain!

;P

Raffi appears to be the only ass kicking player left on this team. Shouldn't K-Lowe have signed someone tougher down the line? A bruising D?

All I have to say about this so far is: Fuck.

I agree, the Oil are looking far too small and far too soft for my liking, especially considering the competition in the WC. I sure as hell don't want Stoll to have to go out there and bang bodies. We'll see who Lowe brings in before training camp (a guy like Scott Hannan would have been nice).

We have all summer to bring in or trade.

Allll summer.

groan.

Okay, fuck this. We could of offered Tom Preissing more than $11 million over four years.

Damn you, Lowe!

James L. said...

If we end up having to rely on Matt Freaking Greene again next year, I'm going to be seriously upset. I'm not asking for an A-list defense. A B-list is perfectly acceptable at this point!

mike w said...

Oh, and nevermind Nylander. He's a Cap now? Apparently, him being an Oiler was "premature."

this upcoming season looks like one giant ass-reaming cluster fuck thus far.

and before someone comes in with there "really? i didn't know the season started in July" rhetoric, i have two words for that: fuck you.

Well, it sounds like someone needs a visit from the hug bug!

I dunno -- I'm wary of deciding one way or the other one whether its good or bad that the oilers lost out on the bidding for a second-rate 34-year-old centre they don't need before hearing what reggie jr. thinks.

That's assuming Preissing had any intention or desire to play in Edmonton. Seems like he took a healthy discount to be out in the moderate inviting climate of California again.

Why does everyone like California so much? It's really fucking hot all the time, the people are all assholes, and in ten years there won't be any water unless they bring it in from Alaska or figure out how to cheaply remove salt from the ocean water. In Nocal it's just as bad. It rains all the time and San Fran is cool, if you like Hippies and cross dressers...

Black Dog said...

Preissing is a nice player, mike, but he was on the third pair in Ottawa for a reason - we have plenty of guys to play on the third pair already. And with Joni, Tarnstrom, Gilbert and Grebeshkov we have plenty of D to play the power play.

Its going to be a long year folks, get ready for it.

Never mind.
