Game night: Oilers take on Canucks in... oh, what is it? 'Von' something...

... Ah, VANCOUVER! Right, there we go. Thanks, ridiculous new jersey.

I kind of feel sorry for Naslund in this photo from the unveiling ceremony. You can tell from the look on his face that he's embarrassed not only for himself, but for everyone in attendance just for being a part of this fashion monstrosity. He looks like some kid in Grade 5 whose mom insisted he wear a turtleneck and blazer to class photo day. Sorry, folks. Not my fault. I'll just go ahead and wait by the bike racks after school so you can all take turns kicking my ass.

How can the Oilers lose to a team in silks like this? Not that our away jerseys are much better, but holy god.

Here's the Oilers lineup, courtesy of the official site:

Penner-Gagner-Hemsky
Moreau-Almtorp-Brodziak
Sanderson-Cogliano-Thoresen
Jacques-Ben Simon-Stortini

Souray-Gilbert
Kemp-Roy
Smid-Greene

Garon
Deslauriers

Nice to see Souray finally healthy enough to draw in, and pairing with Gilbert is interesting — who's the defensive conscience here, exactly? Almtorp, meanwhile, gets an opportunity to shine in Reasoner's usual spot between Moreau and Brodziak, and the speedy third line of Sanderson-Cogs-Thoresen should be a blast to watch. Gagner, perhaps not surprisingly, gets another look in the No. 1 centre spot between Hemsky and Penner. I'm excited to see this kid finally, having missed his first pre-season appearance.

Anyhow, party starts tonight, 8 p.m. sharp. I'll be attempting to watch the free preview on Centre Ice Online here. Prediction: 4-3 Oilers, with goals from Penner, Cogliano, Hemsky and Jacques. Souray will finish with 13 PIM and a minus-3 and make Rod Phillips cry.

Mike W Update: Some more blather about the captaincy at TSN. The more I think about it, the more it becomes obvious: Ethan Moreau is most likely to be the next Oilers captain. Dudes like Horcoff and Stoll are close, but Moreau seems like the best fit, if past captains are anything to go by.

Wow, TJ Kemp is still playing?

mike w said...

Everyone's got sports boners for Almtorp, but I wasn't all that blown away with his game last Tuesday.

Perhaps this is why I'm not a professional scout and work in a cubicle.

Lord Bob said...

I think this is the game where the Gagner bubble bursts. Look for zero points, -2, and a Guy Lafleur rush out of Hemsky that goes absolutely nowhere.

5-2 Canucks. We'll just be letting them get their hopes up for the season, though.

Does the Centre Ice link give anything but a black screen for anyone else?

LJ

Chris! said...

LJ: you might be missing a plug-in or something. Are you clicking on the "Centre Ice" tab in the upper right corner? That was my problem last time.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm yeah. And then you get four little blank tv-looking screens on the left and a list of games on your right. Is there some kind of Play button that becomes active later on?

I'm also using a Mac. Maybe that's the problem.

No Marty?

DOH! And the one game I'll get to see this year...

Maybe I'll take a $10 flight to Columbus and catch a game there.

Canadian dollar = Mike going to games in the US this year.

Rock the house! Screw the Canadian manufacturing industry!

Chris! said...

LJ: You do have to sign up for the free preview before you can see it.

Also, if you're using a mac, the driver you'll need to view is called flip4mac.

Mikey: I'm totally down with a trip to Buffalo. Now I'm regretting not holding off on my last pair of jeans I bought.

Alana said...

Don't forget that Moreau is also the hottest. So he should be captain.

When did this blog become Sex and the City for Men?

Since we moved to Toronto, home of the menergy.

Shit! I forgot saving money was for girls. Thanks, Dave.

mike w said...

Yeah, eat shit and die, Pleasure Motors.

Chris! said...

Yeah, fucker! You'll appreciate my lavish tastes while you're sleeping on that busted-down frat couch in my cramped 1B for a week.

Anyhow, Oilers!

I've never signed up for the online center ice yet I have been able to watch the games,I currently do not have the CI package for my cable either. I beleive the screen may be dark because no games have started yet or there may be a commercial. I could be absolutely wrong though.

mike w said...

I think it will be black until the game starts...

4-3 Oilers? Big words from a guy whose team took a swan dive off of Respectability last season.

(Of course, if you turn out to be right, I will say it's only the preseason and it doesn't count anyway.)

Chris! said...

Ha! You're going down, sieve. Unless you're not, in which case: pre-season.

the sieve said...

Indeed. To meaninglessness!

Thanks for the tip on Centre Ice, btw. I didn't know they were doing that.

There is a list of Games offered on the left side of the browser.

There is a Play area with 4 white squares. These correspond to the 4 blank screens. Click on the white square corresponding to the game and the black square you want to see the game in.

Each black box has optioins to maximize and full screen and what not.

Easy =).

Game link just became active, =).

Jesus, those Canucks jerseys look like ass. Seriously, who the fuck came up with those things?

mike w said...

Game on!

Why is mine blacked out? I'm in Bloody NEVADA!!!

Chris! said...

Alright, just in time for a Sedins goal.

mike w said...

The defence already pretty soft compared to the Leafs game. Gotta love that Tom Gilbert, though.

Chris! said...

Shit, can't seem to get fullscreen mode. Keeps telling me to right-click the video and select "Zoom", but nothing comes up when I click.

Anyhow else having this problem?

SOOOOOOOURAYYYYYY

mike w said...

Whooo! Okay, Souray just do that 30 times and I won't ever call you overpaid again!

gary b said...

Q: Who the hell is Ben Simon?

Canucks radio feed over top of TV feed? bush league.

Scarlett said...

Matt Greene strikes again. Can that guy stop taking penalties? Sheesh!

mike w said...

Hey, I'll take it if it's free.

Matt Greene simply cannot take 2-3 penalties every game this season. Bah!

Rod said...

There's no TV broadcast. It's the arena feed + radio. OK by me...otherwise we wouldn't get the game at all.

mike w said...

Enjoy Brad Isbister, Canucks fans!

Rod said...

Oh yeah, full-screen works for me. Well, the video goes full-screen...just don't expect to actually discern any blasts from #44. :-)

mike w said...

All right, time for bed. Man I hate my job sometimes...

Ciao, fellows and ladies.

Anonymous said...

Yeah...who is Ben Simon?

Chris! said...

"just don't expect to actually discern any blasts from #44. :-)"

I can barely see the jersey numbers and I'm in what's supposed to be the optimal viewing mode. So far, I'm not so jazzed about this service.

Chris! said...

"Yeah...who is Ben Simon?"

I was wondering that myself when I posted the lineup this afternoon. His transaction record, from TSN:

11-Aug-05
Signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

02-Dec-03
Atlanta Thrashers traded Simon Gamache and Kirill Safronov to the Nashville Predators for Tomas Kloucek and Ben Simon.

14-Jul-03
Signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Nashville Predators.

25-Jun-00
Chicago Blackhawks traded Ben Simon to the Atlanta Thrashers for 9th round selection (Peter Flache) in 2000.

21-Jun-97
Drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 5th round (110th overall) in 1997.

Must be a camp walkon?

Anyone notice that the space on the arm of the jersey where the band wraps around wasn't even for the number?? What the hell?

Chris! said...

I saw that. The armbands are WAY fucking stupid. What meaninglessly overdesigned crap.

Scarlett said...

Whoa, nice shot by Gilbert!!!

Scarlett said...

And Greene strikes again....

gary b said...

every time Ben Simon skates on the ice they should play Hank Snow's "I've Been Everywhere"…

Chris! said...

Man, Centre Ice Online kind of sucks. I've had my feed stall or drop out completely like five times in the last ten minutes, and I might as well listen to the radio for all the detail I can see. Can't believe they want people to pay $200 for a season of this.

Anonymous said...

Mine is messing up too. Missed a goal?

Scarlett said...

Glad it's happening to someone else too. This bloody sucks!!! I wouldn't pay $1 for this!

Chris! said...

Screw it, I'm moving over to the CHED. Centre Ice is too annoying, even for free.

uni said...

It's a Beta, so relax, the whole point is to stress test it and gauge feedback. Calm down people.

If it stays this way when it goes 'Gold' then you can bitch and moan lol.

Rod said...

It barely worked at all in the second period, and I'm supposed to ignore it because it's beta? Whatever. It was awful. Beta products should be better than that. First period was OK...so I guess that's a positive.

I was checking the other feeds while the Oiler game was screwed up (they replay the games after they're complete). Those ones were fine, so the system wasn't overloaded. Just their delivery of the Oiler game.

Beta or not, it's also an advertisement of the service. Certainly hasn't sold me on paying a cent.

BTW, anyone else notice their exchange rate? 170USD = 200CAD. NHLCI-online looks like a bad deal to begin with, and that kick in teeth doesn't help.

the weaz said...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who keeps losing the feed. I missed most of the second period. I thought it was my crappy computer. The third is just starting now.

Chris! said...

weaz: Cogliano just scored. You should see it in about 15 minutes.

the weaz said...

Awwww man, you ruined it.

Chris! said...

WHOOOO! Some guy named T.J. Kemp helped Hemsky score a goal!

Chris! said...

OH NO.

So that's what it looks like when Souray gets beat.

By Brad Isbister.

With 2.5 seconds to go.

Sigh.

the weaz said...

@$#@! I hate Isbister.

Rod said...

After all my carping over the horrible feed in the 2nd, it's only fair that I mention the 3rd period was fine...from a feed and comeback perspective...not so much on the ending. Oh well.

uni said...

Of all people, Brad freaking Isbister?

I'd heard about it, but damn Cogs is fast...that burstnin the first half of the 3rd when I figured no way he'd get to the puck ahead of the Canucks D-man...I mean he lost it eventually, but damn.

Trukhno is nifty with the puck but he does seem slow.

Penner didn't do much, and he seemed to lose the puck a little more along the boards than I'd like a big man to, seems to me he doesn't stickhandle particularly well at all...and I really hope he has more finish than he showed tonight.

Souray looks tough, strong on the puck, but shit he's slow, and he can get tied up fairly more easily than I'd like.

Didn't notice Greene except for the penalties, and everyone seems to be on the money when they say Roy was better tonight.

It's a crime if Gilbert doesn't make it out of camp plain and simple, not counting that flukey goal, he's still at least 7 on the depth chart right now for D.

Chris! said...

Ditto on Cogliano, uni: I feel like I'm coming late to the party here, but tonight was my first look and I wasn't expecting him to be THAT fast. That's elite speed. Hopefully the rest of his game catches up.

Only watched the first half of the game before switching to radio, but didn't really notice Penner at all tonight.

I was impressed by Sanderson and Trukhno, however -- the former has great speed and moved the puck smartly on the halfboards on the Oilers' fourth PP. You can tell he thinks the game really well. The latter made a few sharp plays in tight tonight. Good hands, slow feet. Not quite sure what sort of a player he is yet, but he's definitely a player.

You can tell that Souray is irreversibly hardwired for offence. His PP goal from the point was exactly what we're paying for, and he showed great vision leading the rush to gain the zone on that same PP, iirc. But yes. At this point, he looks like he just doesn't "get" the whole defensive positioning thing. He's like a really slow forward forced to man the blueline. Isbister's game-winner is all on Sheldon and his failure to keep the puck in on the pinch. Ah well. I guess we knew this already.

All in all, kind of a poor game, as the grand total of 10 Oilers shots will attest. But you can tell there's a ton of raw talent kicking around this camp. Lots of youth getting very close to being ready for prime time, but no one (aside from Brodziak, I suppose) who really looks like he can help this team win hockey games right now.

Anonymous said...

its the fucking pre-season, let matt greene take all the penalties he wants. Show the other fuckers in the division that we mean business even in the preseason.

David S said...

From the amount of times Sourey was fed the puck for the big bomb, it seems to me he's slated as a PP specialist who will fill in a few minutes elsewhere. With decent linemates he should get 20-30 this year. The way the new-look league is going penalty-wise, I see this as a wise strategy if he can just hold his own on even strength minutes. Of course that means keeping him on the bench when its tied at the end of the game sorta thing.

Man that online feed was rough in the second period. Not to mention the radio audio with the rink video feed. The "full-screen" mode sucked for me too. OK for free, but you'd really have to be desperate to actually pay for this. Oil KIngs on Shaw TV was WAY better.

Just got back from the game... The canucks fans were once again acting like they won the stanley cup on our way out. At least I'm dry and there was no beer thrown like usual...

I think the shot clock guys were asleep, as I'm sure there were about 15 shots where the clock didn't move.

Anyways, this is the one time I actually get a better few of the game than most of you so I'll give my two cents.

Gagner - looked out of his league tonight. I saw him in the super series and he looked like the best player on the ice. Tonight He looked like he needs another year in junior. He seems smrat and skilled enough. Just really not strong enough out there.

Cogliano - makes the team as far as I'm concerned, the fastest guy on the ice, if the fourth line has cogliano,Sanderson and anyone else I'll be pretty happy.

Brodziak - I kept asking, who's 51 again... it was always him. Looked good.

Greene - horrible. Looked like he was unable to get the puck without taking a penalty. Roy looked much stronger along the boards and although it won't happen, I'd love to see greene out and Roy in.

Hemsky - had the magic. lost the puck a few times. Even the hardcore canucks fans couldn't help themselves from gasping during a few of his play tonight.

Penner - Looked strong. Not spectacular, but He'll be just fine I think. Some chemistry between him and Hemsky at times.

Simon - WHo is that guy... I actually thought he was alright out there. strong along the boards... don't see him making the team, but a solid call up if required.

Stortini - Looked faster than I remember him. Not a bad tilt. Him and that Fitzgerald guy were talking through the warmups so I was waiting for that one.

Jacques - Another good tilt. came out of no where. Looks like that Brown guy found a sensitive subject to bring up. PLay was dead. seemed calm and all of a sudden the gloves flew.

Thoresen - I liked him tonight. Seemed a little bit alone out there at times.

Altworp?? - didn't really notice him out there.

Souray - Shots were dangerous. outlet passes were generally well played I thought. I didn't like Truhkno with him on the PP though.

Truhkno - See Previous. Seemed a bit lazy at times.

Roy - Best player in the oilers zone all night.

Gilbert - had some errant passes. Got a little fancy when it wasn't required, not too bad out there though. I see him cracking the lineup full time next season, or getting called up after christmas if things change.

Garon - Made 3 or 4 ridiculous saves. had a few week goals. Strong puckhandler.

Google account is messed up so I have to post this anonymous...

IDIOTS!!! You oil fans are so hurtin. What team are you watchin? Seasons over before it starts and there seems to be some optimism in your writings. The oil have the worst team in the conference and by FAR the ugliest jersey! What is with it? It looks like a practice roster out there. The Nucks are all class and thats all that there is to say...
Ha ha, losers :)

Anonymous said...

Just back from the game - Oiler fans, so sorry, but it's going to be a loooong season. Hemsky is a good NHL player, but didn't see many others out there. I thought Gilbert was pretty good, moved the pck out of his own end well, Cogliano showed some flashes, but on the whole, this team bites. They made Ryan Kesler look a bit Gretzky-esque. That's bad.

Imagine that, an anonymous Nuckin' troll. One division win, followed by a first round exit, and they're out trolling. Special group.

About the last thing a 'Nucklehead should be cracking anybody about is team jerseys. The Oilers jersey isn't the best in the league (see Washington), but it beats that ridiculous VANCOUVER billboard. Must be booze goggles talking if you like that putrid Canucks jersey.

Temujin said...

How can the Oilers lose to a team in silks like this?

That's how, biznatch :-)

There's nothing wrong with a little trolling during pre-season. When your team is this damn good, you can troll wherever and whenever you want, hehehe. Get used to the disappointment, Oil fans!

All snark aside though: has Garon looked any good at all in the pre-season? I thought he'd be able to shoulder a bit of the workload this season, but his stats aren't all that great so far, and he didn't seem to be in very good position on at least a couple Canuck goals tonight (though I've only seen the highlights, didn't watch the game)

Chris! said...

Biznatch? Man, that takes me back.

Last night was the first I saw of Garon, and I thought he looked pretty good, actually. Very athletic, good fundamentals, strong puck handler as someone mentioned above... his reflexes may be a little slow, though. He got peppered with shots last night and let in a couple weak goals, but a lot of that was due more to poor defence than spotty goaltending.

I think he held his own. If nothing else, he should at least win a few more hockey games than Markkanen.

And as for the return of the Vancouver trolls, we can't do much about them, other than take solace in the fact that they're obviously nothing more than a bunch of sweaty, harelipped cretins who have to leave Post-it notes to themselves on the fridge just so they remember to wash their underwear. They sure have gotten all high and mighty since good fortune dropped Roberto Luongo into the laps of their otherwise dismal AHL team. Here's hoping Naslund crests the 50-point mark again this year.

Welcome back to CinO, morons!

I'm sorry? Do you even have a basic understanding of how Beta testing works? Also I wasn't saying be happy, I said expect this occasionally because it IS a beta.

Betas are meant mainly for testing, so they can find problems like the feed one in the 2nd period and FIX them BEFORE release. It's not a Demo, and it's not meant as mainly for advertising.

Also you can't say the other feeds seemed fine so it wasn't a bandwidth problem or overload problem, each game could be isolated, or on a different set of servers, or more people could have been tuning into the Oilers game.

When you don't know anything about IT/IS, or the concept of what a Beta is, try to keep the snarky comments to a minimum.

Beta Software (Wikipedia definition)

Chris! said...

Way to oversell your point, uni. I do think we all understand what "Beta version" means, but the point here is that, beta or not, this preview is intended to sell viewers on the idea of watching NHL hockey on their computers, and buggy feeds do not do a good job of selling that service. I realize that they're working out the kinks, but I had more problems than just the connection (sub-par resolution, no full-screen capability, at least for me on my Mac).

I'm going to check back with it a few more times this pre-season, obviously, but bottom line: a guy at work asked me today whether or not they should fork out $200 for Centre Ice online, I said absolutely not. Decent delivery for a free service, but not worth any amount of money. At least not yet.

uni
appreciated your Beta explanations, quite useful for me
thanks

Rod said...

uni:What the hell was that? Are you under the impression you're the only person on here that knows what a beta is? Did you overlook my subsequent post that indicated the 3rd period was OK? Why are you so defensive about NHLCI-Online? Nice assumption about my background BTW. Time to get your crystal ball recalibrated. Seriously, you couldn't have been more wrong.

Like Chris said, you totally oversold your position. I know what "beta" is, and I've beta tested quite a few products. I expect errors in betas. I also expect them to not fall down completely for extended periods. When they do, I expect some sort of error message or feedback of some kind. Not just a black box. Calling the second period acceptable or expected for a beta product is to distort what a *public* beta is all about.

BTW, in case you didn't notice, there's a distinct difference between beta business software and beta Internet services. Besides testing, NHLCI-O is meant for selling subscriptions to the full season. How else does a person get a look at NHLCI-O? This is it. Very soon a credit card will be needed to even take a peek. At that point, it's a little late to find out deficiencies. Consequently, this beta also serves as a demo (like many browser based betas). How you can say otherwise is beyond me. If the focus was testing--as you assert--where are the feedback forms/forums, the bug tracking system, etc.?

A streaming product becoming completely unusable for that length of time is not acceptable, even for a public beta. Especially for a preview that's supposed to sell subscriptions. It just isn't. If a usability hit that large was reasonable to expect, they would have done more--much more--than simply tag the banner with "beta". I don't care what Wikipedia page you link to. Like Chris I'll probably give it another look, but I haven't even considered a subscription based on the experience thus far.

When you don't know anything about IT/IS, or the concept of what a Beta is, try to keep the snarky comments to a minimum.
Uh, right. How 'bout this uni, you wonder-dog psychic. When you don't know anything about someone, try to keep the asinine presumptions to a minimum. Unless you like the taste of your own toe jam. Dumbass.

David S said...

I wouldn't demo/beta/trial (or whatever you wanna call it) a shit-ass product and expect people to fall over themselves to sign up just because its "online". But that's just me.

Full-screen didn't work on a MAC. The feed was disjointed and the commentary was pathetic. Free maybe if supported by ads. But pay for this crap? Ya-right. Its like a couple of high school kids put this together for their friends.
