Oilers Vs. Canucks: GDT

So what do we got up front? And with Coach MacTavish's Blender™ styled bench management, will it even matter?

27 Penner 10 Horcoff 83 Hemsky
14 Torres 16 Stoll 88 Gagner
8 Sanderson 19 Reasoner 51 Brodziak
89 Schremp 13 Cogliano 46 Stortini

78 Pouliot?

Just a guess. Cogliano and Gagner could snake their way anywhere up and down the four lines depending on how the game is going. Adding to the confusion is that most of these guys are Centres. Will Pouliot sit?

These West Coast games are killers. I have to get up at 6:00 am tomorrow to run a half marathon, but I'll probably be up watching the game like a total dupe. So with that in mind, I have one small request for the Edmonton Oilers tonight: just win. Win the effing game. Like, you know, victories? Collect them. Make it happen. Win.

To be honest, I don't know if the oilers have it in them to turn right around and beat Vancouver in their own building. A tough game to be sure.

If I see another ad for Jian Ghomeshi's stupid radio show I may have to vandalize his Wikipedia entry again...

Craig Simpson is the colourman tonight. Weird.

I wonder if he'll have any insights about the Oilers' moribund powerplay.

FIGHT!

One second in!

You're running the half tomorrow? An Oilers fan and a runner? So you're a masochist.

Nice play by Greene to stay with Naslund.

Indeed, ten seconds after the SCF Game 7 loss and somewhere around mile 12 feel about the same.

Greene and Gilbert as a pairing, eh? There's some "youthful exuberence" for you.

And Gagner starts on the first line. I should have guessed that.

Schremp sighting!

More ads for Jian Ghomeshi's snorefest CBC show.

Here's an actual quote from Jian's Wikipedia entry:

"I love Vancouver with a heinous passion. I love its beaches, its grass, its lovingly depressed rainy days and of course its countless beautiful lovers, just walking the streets with nothing to live for but the music and the dancefloor." (HighLife, March 2006).

What a dink.

hmm... looks like Calgary is a couple of minutes away from dropping the Oil into the bottom of the conference if they don't win tonight. Where did the start of the season go? Things are starting to get more than a little uncomfortable.....

Looks like the Oilers had a software update this morning. Lotsa jump tonight!

mike w said...

Sweet Christ is that PP frustrating.

Darien said...

Every time I click on Colorado's game log, Ryan Smyth scores a goal. True story.

mike w said...

Nice few minutes of play for the Oil, though.

simpson is slagging the pp already...

Hey, he's washed his hands of the thing!

Two giveaways on the powerplay for Schremp. Nerves?

fuck.

THAT IS TERRIBLE.

I'm afraid this may be a story we see quite a bit this season. Team plays well, kids look good, then something breaks down and now its 1-0. Looks like Minnesota all over again.

Penner looked far better that period.

MacT on the bench...

"I'd give my left nut for a game breaking forward right about now."

cogliano needs to learn that luango ain't no punk college goalie - he's tried high glove 3 times in the last game and a half, easy saves every time...

*sigh*

I miss the days when we were dangerous short handed.

Henrik Sedin.

Daniel Sedin.

Fuck.

Halfway through the second period. I'm depressed. But I'll say this: Cogliano at least seems to know where the other guy's net is. That's a plus.

No one going after Souray on that second goal? Shame on you all.

I'm still here. Mortified.

This team is so lucky that I have a great sense of humour.

mike w said...

Ah yes, the "flaring tempers" part of the game.

"I'd give my left nut for a game breaking forward right about now."

You mean Penner isn't a game breaking forward?!?!!?!?!?11

mike w said...

Lucky 13 gets the goal. Good for him.

Man that was frustrating...

is it me or is Penner looking a lot like another Lupul? What is Burke feeding his players so that they all stop performing at higher latitudes?

My game day notes. From someone who was AT the game:

1. Canuck fans do not know how to cheer for their own team. They can only put down the other.

2. Sheldon Souray is a floater. He was solely responsible for the first and second goals scored against.

3. Matt Greene wasn't as bad as I thought he was.

4. Pitkanen was bad.

5. Poor Roli

6. Canuck fans HATE Raffi Torres. He wasn't even fighting and people were shouting "Raffi sucks" in the third period.

7. If you were at the game and you heard some crazy person shouting, "Five Stanley Cups" whenever the Canuck fans shouted "Oilers s*ck" that was me.

8. If you saw some crazy drunk person try take on a whole section when they were shouting, "Raffi sucks" that was me. And I was sober.

I learned long ago not to drink at games. People do stupid shit at games when drunk and I'd rather do stupid shit sober.

9. Poor Horc. He gave it his all. Same with Roli.

This team needs to start gelling and quick. We don't have the luxury of losing all these division games.

We've now lost 4 and a row.

Before the 3 period I started questioning my loyalty to this team. Why am I even an Oiler fan anymore? Why do I put up with this. I was going to throw my mini-packs away and become a full-fledged Avs fan. Then the chanting came and I thought if the Oilers are going to go down, I'm going down fighting for them.

Honestly, I told a friend I'd try get kicked out of the game if they were losing in the third but nobody would fight me.

Except for the dude that told me to get out of his country.

I don't think that's something you should shout at a full-blooded Aboriginal.

Even at the end the fans around me were shouting "Oilers s*ck" which made me stop, look at them and say, "so does your mother."

This team frustrates the hell out of me and I'm fully aware that I'm dangerously close to becoming a leafs fan by believing every year they can do it.

Blah.

They're my boys.

But they better start taking pride in the uniform they're wearing.

Tania said...

PS: I miss Ryan Smyth A LOT

Darien said...

Seriously though... How much more of this before everyone here is a Leafs fan? Is it at that point already?

My brother saw a bunch of the Oilers at the Iron Horse last night. I guess they partied too much and it showed by tonight's result.

When will the complete suckage stop?!!?! :(

I'm not sure that the whole characterization of MacTavish as a mad line blender. Compared to Pat Quinn? ... sure. Compared to video games? ... absolutely. Compared to Bowman, Keenan or Lemaire he's downright passive. And when things aren't going well all of Babcock, Crawford, Trotz, Murray, Q, Carlyle and Wilson are just as active by my eye. Maybe others too.

I don't know who tagged him with this, but it was on Oilfans in about 2000 I think. Though the earliest reference I can find to the "MacTavish blender" is here in 2003, just with a quick google search.

I remember trying to show this a couple of times on the Oilfans board. It was a year when Naslund-Bertuzzi were tearing up the league, maybe '03 ... and when you looked at the splits they both spent about 30% of their EV icetime apart. And they were as close to a couple as there was in the league at that time.

It seems to me that almost all coaches at this level mix things up when things aren't working or ugly matchups are cropping up. It is a leaguewide phenomenon methinks, not a local one.

Sorry to stray off topic. It's just a pet peeve, that's all.

I thought that's what I heard in the background of the broadcast =).

Also RE: Jian Ghomeshi, I'm sick of watching his adverts run near round the clock on CBC. I doubt anyone can watch it without being immediately put off by blatant attempt to present him and his show as 'cool' and 'trendy'.

And for whoever said it, Cogliano makes the PK dangerous =).

Canuck fans HATE Raffi Torres.

This is absolutely, 100%, unequivocally true.

But he'd look damn good in a Canucks uniform :-)

Moreau and Pisani were both out of the line-up, and I suspect these two games might have been different if they were playing.

based on the last 3 games my playoff hopes are gone. We knew this team was high risk high reward BUT, we seem to be a bit short on reward, thanks to our veteran component. We are high on the risk componant and the breakdowns may be more attributed to the veterans that part is a bit frustrating. Gagner has been close to our best forward this weekend. I have no fault on Penner we need to get him the puck. Atleast gagner is looking for him. They will find each other eventually. Chopper is SO important to this team, we need him back desparately. JFJ is a Way better option than Stortini.

David S said...

Well I guess with a busted foot, Chopper's gonna be out of it for a while. I can't imagine how he must be feeling right about now.

But you have an excellent point Dave. Maybe its the beer I've been swilling while watching games at Hudson's downtown lately, but every game has been fairly entertaining so far. I keep getting this confused feeling like we should be winning a few more of these than we are. The young guys certainly have the pedal to the floor, but there's been painfully little finish. Isn't that the job of the vets?

This is a team that has to be firing on all cylinders every night to have a chance. Its like the older guys (and I exclude Sandy from this bunch) have yet to find their game. Anybody out there have an idea about this?
