Oilers take on Blue Jackets, blogger wears puckhat

The Oilers have shot at DOUBLE DIGITS in the win column tonight against Columbus. In a cruel twist of fate, along with a liberal ball-tickling of irony, the Oilers have become the Blue Jackets of the NHL and vice versa, you know... like that movie Vice Versa starring Judge Reinhold and Fred Savage?

Suddenly, with Doug MacLean out of the way, Blue Jackets management already looks sleeker, smarter and balder under new GM and ex-Oiler Scott Howson. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have Ken Hitchcock behind the bench either.

In this weird netherworld, Jason Chimera is only 6 points short of Hemsky's team-second 18 points, with a better even strength rating to boot. Mike Peca has 9 points in 15 games, which is basically 2/3 of what he got in 71 games two years ago with the Oilers when the dude looked like he had a fork stuck in his back. Another ex-Oil Jan Hejda has a team leading plus/minus. But I gotta say: as much as I fear Rick Nash, I refuse to acknowledge Columbus as a good team. High time to snatch a win and steal back reality.

Dear EIG,

I know you're trying to get a new tax-payer funded arena, but seriously do something about the quality of Rexall's ice.

It used to be the best in the league. Lately it looks no better than an iced-over driveway, with pucks bouncing on almost every pass.

I have yet to see Stortini make a good play.

It's the weather, dude. It finally dropped today. It should get better soon.

I don't understand why announcers think they can no longer use the term "his stick snapped like a twig" because of the composites. I mean, I understand. They're dumb. But why do I have to suffer through their inability to figure out what a simile is?

I think you and I are the only two watching this game, Mike. Again.

mike w said...

Okay, the reffing in this league is a joke. Someone explain that Stoll call to me.

mike w said...

Indeed, Andy.

May I suggest to Kevin Quinn "and his stick snapped like a stick!"

Masochists. I'm off to support local arts and culture!

yay Mr. Cogliano

mike w said...

Cogs is some player, huh? I'm a big fan of Sanderson tonight as well.

Meanwhile, the Torres-Stoll-Stortini line has lost their checking assignment. I haven't liked this combo for games now...

OILERSSSS!!!!

REGULATION WIN!!!

I forget what I'm supposed to feel!!!

Black Dog said...

And Pisani coming back. I think we can begin to talk about a playoff run gentlemen.

mike w said...

Er...

Andy Grabia said...

And Pisani coming back.

Bah. I don't believe that story at all. It wasn't even a story. It was an "ice chips report." But when him and Mr. Glass get back, look out! That means two fewer stiffs we have to dress. So many to choose from, too. Nilsson, Stortini, Stoll, Torres, the list goes on and on.

Black Dog said...

Just said he's back for Anaheim or LA, right after the game report.

San Fernando, man!

And mike, shame on you! BELIEVE!

Heh.

WTF? That has to be some record for recovery from colitis. Took me over a year to gain back 45lbs, and the dude does 30 in under 2 months? Now he's coming back to the lineup within 1-3 weeks?

Any wagers on how long the standing ovation is for him his first home game?

mike w said...

Well I'll give you this: my biggest concern is the even strength play, which is tipped against the Oilers.

I agree with Andy: just replacing Stortini or Nilsson with Pisani will do wonders.

Black Dog said...

All kidding aside was the game as one sided as the shots indicate?

uni said...

Well I still believe in Nilsson...then again I also still believe in Mikhnov so take that with an ocean of salt.

Dudes needs to stop fading after initially playing gangbusters. Here's hoping his switch gets broken and sticks to the 'on' position.

Nice feed, but Penner and Cogs really made that play happen.

I'm horrible at the fine nuances, but it didn't seem that one sided. The Jackets got a lot of traffic and deflections on Rollie for sure. The puck was bouncing all over the ice like a ping pong as well.

The one thing I noticed was that Roloson wasn't kicking out as many rebounds as he was at the start of the season. And the defence did a better job of clearing loose pucks when they did get away from Rollie.

Almost to a man the Oilers played better tonight, and by that I mean less glaring mistakes and collapsing towards the net and containing the puck. Rourke had his best game of the season and looked like a fine 5-6 guy.

Columbus had more scoring chances, but I don't think they flat out and out deserved to win this game.

Same old script, Oilers worked hard, limited their mistakes, got excellent goal tending, and got a few bounces. Same way they'll get most of their wins this season.

Andy - Like I said, I saw Pisani having some wine a couple of weeks ago at Hudson's downtown. That tells me he's close - very close.

And when do we get to hear about the shit show you and Pat created last weekend? Uhhhh...assuming you can remember any of it.

I am excited about the fact that we beat the Columbus Blue Jackets at home.

Shoot me now.

I'm more than a little disappointed that there is no photo of the blogger in a puckhead

I am so at the first game San Fernando plays at home. I'm giddy just thinking about it.

hunter1909: I've just been on a 2 week vacation to Portugal, so was able to miss out several Oilers games. But I did take a peek in the local phone book to see how many people in the Algarve region are named "Tavares". Quite a few.

Oh yeah. Looks like the team is about to wow us with a "drive to escape the bottom 5" lol

Seriously, did Torres break up with his g/f? Or, as an entirely unrelated question, is he nursing a groin injury? At some point he was hot and on the top line and this was credited to his main squeeze helping him put his head down during the summer and at the start of the season and now...radio silence. Anyone?

Fernando is over-rated ... ah, let the flaming begin, but it's true ...

Andy Grabia said...

Fernando is over-rated

It's actually an interesting point. If you want 2006 playoffs Pisani all the time, then yeah, you are going to think he's over-rated. If you want two-way player who does everything right, then I'd say he's under appreciated. Same thing goes for Horcoff. Neither guy is sexy. But they are both damn good hockey players.

Paulus said...

Matt, Torres is Schrodinger's cat: half-alive, half-dead, pretty much just a hypothetical assertation meant to confound and annoy Oiler fans.

He's the fog that turns you inside out and then vanishes.

The less esoteric way of putting it: the more he changes, the more he remains the same.

Pleasure Motors said...

Raffi Torres' nickname has to be Schrödinger's Cat from now on; that's just too perfect.

Also, I feel Fernando Pisani is fairly accurately rated but vastly overpaid. We pay him like 2006 playoffs Fernando, but I think most fans just expect a perfect third-liner, which is what he is. For what it's worth.

God, I'd love to hear Rod Phillips try to tackle that one.

Neither guy is sexy.

I disagree. Horcoff is HOT.

Andy Grabia said...

Neither guy is sexy.

I meant their style of play. They are Oilers. Obviously they are hot.

Edit to the Torres moniker, Gato de Schrödinger (since he is latino you know....)

btw - i would really like to see the daily show appearance, they've taken it down all over the place...

Anon, might as well head straight to the horse's mouth: I think you can still catch it at the Comedy Central website...

An up and coming Oilers site is xxxxx.com. No where near the quality on this site, but good to support fledgling sites.

Yeah, they are familiar... I'll say that. Although I'm not a big fan of ad-driven sites.
