And the Oilers Masterton Trophy Nominee, as voted by local media, who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey is... Robbie Schrem...er... Fernando Pisani!
Generally, the annual award is given to a player who has lost an eye, is an alcoholic or who has the most cancer that particular year, so you have to guess that Fernando Pisani is a front-runner after his truly miraculous recovery from ulcerative colitis which should have ended his career. Jason Blake's treatable leukemia should give Pisani a run for his money, but Pisani's grisly toll speaks for itself: 30 pounds lost, intestinal hemmorraging of about 6 pints of blood (there's a mental image) and barely being able to walk to the bathroom without collapsing from exhaustion. Six months later he's back on the team, with a workmanlike 10 goals and 16 points.
And if any of you "Eastern Media" types are perhaps reading this on your Quiznos lunch break: just remember that voting for Fernando Pisani would be your big chance to disavow the anti-Western Conference bias you're always unfairly accused of.
