Amazingly, improbably, and despite getting our asses handed to us by the Canucks in an almost identically important matchup on Thursday, the Oilers still have a chance of pulling within three points of a playoff spot with a win over Colorado this afternoon, if you can believe it. Couple that with a Nashville loss to Chicago (game will be going on at the same time, you can follow its progress here), and all of a sudden this ridiculously overachieving club could leapfrog the Predators and move into sole possession of ninth place.
Lose to Colorado and we're seven points back with six games to play. Done, in other words.
I can't say I'd be disappointed, considering how completely unexpected this late-season run has been. But at win today would change everything. And I can think of at least one team's fans that are sweating bullets at the prospect of facing this club in the first round:
Wildcard: Edmonton. No. Thank. You. They’re too hot. They’re having way too much fun. They’re too young to realize they have no business making the playoffs and definitely too young to realize they would have no business beating Detroit. We don’t need that team in our lives. No score prediction is necessary here, I think; this is a pass/fail situation if I've ever seen one. All we can ask is they make a game of it.
I'll be glued to the couch this afternoon, hugging a pillow for security and hammering out a litany of swear words in the comments. It might even be high time to pull out the jersey, as Sac so forcefully suggests.
Yes, this run has been a dinktease, but hey. I'll take what I can get.
