Oilers vs. Avs: The Great 2008 Dinktease continues

Amazingly, improbably, and despite getting our asses handed to us by the Canucks in an almost identically important matchup on Thursday, the Oilers still have a chance of pulling within three points of a playoff spot with a win over Colorado this afternoon, if you can believe it. Couple that with a Nashville loss to Chicago (game will be going on at the same time, you can follow its progress here), and all of a sudden this ridiculously overachieving club could leapfrog the Predators and move into sole possession of ninth place.

Lose to Colorado and we're seven points back with six games to play. Done, in other words.

I can't say I'd be disappointed, considering how completely unexpected this late-season run has been. But at win today would change everything. And I can think of at least one team's fans that are sweating bullets at the prospect of facing this club in the first round:

Wildcard: Edmonton. No. Thank. You. They’re too hot. They’re having way too much fun. They’re too young to realize they have no business making the playoffs and definitely too young to realize they would have no business beating Detroit. We don’t need that team in our lives.
No score prediction is necessary here, I think; this is a pass/fail situation if I've ever seen one. All we can ask is they make a game of it.

I'll be glued to the couch this afternoon, hugging a pillow for security and hammering out a litany of swear words in the comments. It might even be high time to pull out the jersey, as Sac so forcefully suggests.

Yes, this run has been a dinktease, but hey. I'll take what I can get.

Last link is dead.

Please let these fuckers win.

Just tuned in to see Fatty capitalize on a beauty pass from Hemsky 50 seconds in.

Not a bad start.

Chris! said...

Holy shit. I just realized that Roloson is in net. For the fifth straight game. Garon's "upper body" injury must be worse than we think.

Arnott just scored to put Nashville up 1-0.

andy grabia said...

WOO HOOOO!!!!

mike w said...

Why are people booing Ryan Smyth? Because he was an awesome Oiler for 10 years?

Fans are idiots.

Chris! said...

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGNNNNEEEEEEERRRRR!!!!!!!

Fuck, man. AWESOME back pass by Hemsky to set up that shortie.

YES!

andy grabia said...

WOw. WOW. WOW.

Chris! said...

I'm going to have an erection all game long now, all thanks to Hemsky.

Avs are giving up an awful lot of odd-man rushes and really don't look like they're up to the task today. Is Forsberg even playing?

SAN PISANIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!

Hemsky's speed is just off the charts today.

Chris! said...

WOW. Great work by Reasoner wretain the puck behind the net then set up for the screen for Pisani.

Budaj now in net for Colorado. Didn't really think any of the goals were Theodore's fault at all, but the Avs have to shake something up, I guess.

skinny65 said...

This is just fantastic, I've got the jersey on and yelling epithats at the dog, life is good!!!

skinny65 said...

Ooops, should have qualified that, the dog is a flames fan.

Chris! said...

Dogs are just happy to have the attention.

Gleneration X is looking hot out there tonight. It's just a matter of time for this fourth line.

Chris! said...

I love Crazy Roloson.

Chris! said...

Nice first period, to state the obvious. Oilers came out flying with Hemsky at the helm and the Avs never really caught up with the pace.

Anyhow, we all know this team can skate and score goals. But can they hold onto this lead?

Oh good. Here comes that fucking dummy PJ Stock to barf out some words that Ron McLean pretends to take seriously.

sacamano said...

I hope Roli starts flipping off his mask, again.

mike w said...

Can we end the PJ Stock experiment?

Someone please grab Kelly Hrudey from whatever small town he's in for the seemingly endless Karft Hockeyville bore fest and put him back in the studio where he belongs.

mike w said...

Is anyone else getting all of these Jian Ghomeshi house ads, or is that just on the CBC webstream?

The man is a twerp.

andy grabia said...

Is anyone else getting all of these Jian Ghomeshi house ads, or is that just on the CBC webstream?

Nothing out west. Lucky for us. Sadly, he's playing the Folk Fest this year. I think I'll be in the beer tent for that one.

Roli vs. Smytty=me confused as to what to do.

skinny65 said...

Mike, it's the biggest game of the year and you're giving us process comments. C'mon let Jian Ghomeshi go, the Oilers are stomping all over the avs!!! Feel the joy and leave the cbc hate for early next year when the Oil have lost 6 in a row.

Chris! said...

I haven't seen any Ghomeshi yet, mercifully.

Second period, 3-0 Oilers. Chicago does us a solid with a goal from Ladd to tie up Nashville 1-1.

Let's do this thing.

sacamano said...

Where's the confusion. Smytty plays for the Avs. Fuck him.

andy grabia said...

Where's the confusion. Smytty plays for the Avs. Fuck him

If only it was that easy.

I don't like this period so far. No jump at all.

And there we go. Fucking Tyler Arnason. Again. Fuck.

Chris! said...

Man, fucking Tyler Arnason. What does he have against the Oilers. That's his 13th goal and 26th point in 26 career games v. Edmonton.

Sakic also picks up his 1000th career assist.

Get it back under control, boys.

mike w said...

Arrggh

andy grabia said...

Sakic also picks up his 1000th career assist.

The Anton Stasny thing blew me away.

andy grabia said...

Insane pass from Pitkanen, and a goal.

Chris! said...

BROOOOOOOOODZZZZZIIIIAAAAAAAAAK!!!!!!

Fucking YES!

Great pass by Pitkanen and a quick little wrister make it 4-1 Oilers.

Chris! said...

Oilers would be up 5-1 right now if Stoll was in the press box instead of centring for Hemsky.

mike w said...

I'm amazed that the Oilers have sucked about 13 out of the last 15 teams into trading chances like this. I'm not even sure how they do it.

mike w said...

Indeed, Stoll has been particularly sucky.

andy grabia said...

WHOA. That last move by Hemsky made my loins hungry.

andy grabia said...

Three posts today.

Duke loses. WHOOOOOO!!! What a day.

mike w said...

Man, Colorado looks terrible right now.

Chris! said...

Agreed, a really half-assed game by Colorado so far. But the Oilers have been as good as the score suggests.

Roloson hasn't had much work but has come up big when he needed to and all four of Edmonton's lines are creating opportunities (at least, until the puck gets sucked into the immense gravitational pull of Stoll's offensive black hole).

Pitkanen's provided all the flash from the back end, but I've also really liked Grebeshkov's game today. He's made some big strides in his defensive game.

andy grabia said...

(at least, until the puck gets sucked into the immense gravitational pull of Stoll's offensive black hole).

Pouliot is no better. Terrible.

Coach Mitch Mitchel said...

yes, beat colorado! Do the Canucks' bidding!

mike w said...

Whoo! Close call!

mike w said...

Um, nevermind.

Christ.

Chris! said...

Fuck. Avs are showing signs of life. First Sakic hits a post and now Ruslan Salei gets lucky and tumbles one in from the blue line to make it 4-2. Looks like the Oilers are sitting back a bit.

Chris! said...

Do we not have a single defenceman who can hit the net from the blueline? The end boards behind Budaj are taking a beating.

andy grabia said...

but I've also really liked Grebeshkov's game today. He's made some big strides in his defensive game.

Good offense, too. He just scored on his own goal.

Chris! said...

FUCK.

ME.

andy grabia said...

Fuck me. Just terrible defence.

Nut-cuttin' time.

Chris! said...

Oh, jesus fucking christ. You fucking sucks.

andy grabia said...

Another blown three goal lead. Just terrible defence.

mike w said...

Uh oh.

andy grabia said...

I'm sorry, but Grebeshkov has been fucking terrible today.

andy grabia said...

WHAT. THE. HELL.

Chris! said...

Yeah, I spoke to soon on Grebs, I think.

But:

POOOOOOOOUUULLLLLLLIIIIOOOOOOOTTT!!!!

Way to atone.

mike w said...

The Black Hole!

andy grabia said...

I can't believe anyone has talked trash about Pouliot. I've always been a fan. :)

mike w said...

Anytime this game wants to slow down...

Phew!

Chris! said...

I can hardly wait to see how Stoll kills THIS powerplay...

Chris! said...

Penner has no idea what he's doing out there.

andy grabia said...

I can hardly wait to see how Stoll kills THIS powerplay...

Gold.

Chris! said...

Nice speed by Stoll to pull away on what looked like a partial breakaway. And then... nothing.

AND HOLY FUCK SAM GAGNER JUST SCORED AGAIN.

andy grabia said...

Is it 1983? Should I go purchase "Sports" by Huey Lewis and the News? What the hell is going on here?

Chris! said...

Three stars of this game: Hemsky, Gagner, Pitkanen. What an amazing game for the kid so far tonight.

Roli earns himself a stadium-filling chant for his easy pad save on Smyth's breakaway. Man, I love that Edmonton crowd.

David S said...

2008/09 First Line:

Hemsky - Horcoff - Gagner

Done.

"...Its a western shootout!" Fuck yeah! Its a boys on the bus game!

mike w said...

Hemsky you rascal! It was almost like a two-on-one was too boring at this point...

An amazing player. Looking more and more like a 1 point-per-game player.

andy grabia said...

That Hemsky move was just stupid.

mike w said...

It was DEF.

Chris! said...

I don't care for Jeff Finger's name.

Chris! said...

Oh, man, no fucking way. Liles banks a puck off Gilbert's stick and it's 6-5.

andy grabia said...

Please God, no shootout.

mike w said...

Heart in my throat, balls in my stomach...

Chris! said...

Too cute by half, Hemsky. Too cute by half.

Chris! said...

ROLI ROLI ROLI ROLI

andy grabia said...

That's a goal? WOW.

Chris! said...

Reasoner misses the EN, but officials give him the goal anyhow because he was hooked as he shot. Didn't even know that was a rule, but good enough to me.

7-5 Oilers. Nashville is now in OT, so they've picked up at least a point, which puts them, for now, in a tie with Edmonton for 9th place.

What a crazy game.

andy grabia said...

I think Terry Crisp is doing this Preds game. That has to be a good omen.

I should also note that I had the beard and Whale jersey in full effect today. It worked. Again. The mojo is back!

Coach Mitch Mitchel said...

So does the Roli chant make up for the Lou calls the other night?

mike w said...

Sigh. Preds win.

Chris! said...

Shit. Dan Ellis gets beat by Patrick Kane, but stones Toews and Sharp as Peverley and Radulov score to give the Preds a 2-1 SO win. That gives them 81 points and a tie with the Oilers for 9th.

andy grabia said...

Meh. We did our part. Colorado is still the target. And Van is only five up. Time to get on the Flames and Minny bandwagon, people. We want them beating everyone but us.

David S said...

Wild game huh? Although I'm getting a little sick of the game of tag the Oilers play behind their net late in the third. I wonder if there's some team rule that says they can't lay any bodychecks in their own end. I can't believe how many times I've caught myself thinking "hit that bastard!", almost as many times as I was yelling "shooooot!" at Hemsky through my TV last year.

Fuck it. Oil's well that ends well I suppose.

george said...

Actually Nashville has 82 points so they are in sole possession of 9th.

andy grabia said...

Good to see Ron MacLean quoting Dellow on the Spacek-Hemsky combo.

Minny. Uggh. No way Hemsky gets that kind of room on Monday. And that's another team that just kills us. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

andy grabia said...

Oh, one more thing. I demand Smytty crying at Hextall's hammer for the next game. Don't mess with success.

David S said...

We were in sole possession of 9th for about 15 minutes on TSN's standing page. I took a screen shot for posterity.

Chris! said...

George: Right, thanks. I just confused amid all this excitement.

And yeah, Minnesota's going to eat us alive next week. But let's not think of that right now.

george said...

What is going on with Garon's injury? I really think he needs to be in net against Minnesota. Roli just seems to crumble against his old team. If I remember correctly we've only had one regulation win against the Wild and Garon was in net.
Roli has been OKAY. He reached his peak against San Jose but really had no business being in against Vancouver with the way Garon has played against them.

Doogie said...

Reasoner misses the EN, but officials give him the goal anyhow because he was hooked as he shot. Didn't even know that was a rule, but good enough to me.

The theory being that if your name is not Patrik Stefan, an unconstested breakaway (i.e. penalty shot) on an empty net would result in a goal. I've seen awarded goals noted in the scoresheet in the past, but never seen one happen before.

So I'm thinking, these kids don't know how to play Western Conference hockey worth shit, but they're pretty damned good at Campbell Conference hockey.
