Something to cheer for/with/to/against

You remember this week's 10-2 loss by the Boston Bruins against the Washington Capitals? That was me. By placing a $20 bet on the Bruins at the MGM Grand sportsbook in Las Vegas, I think I broke the Gambling-Time Continuum somehow, as I'm now 0-5 when betting straight up on hockey games. The Caps were up 4-0 in the first eight minutes of the game, before I even had time to get back from the bar with a beer.

I later thought about betting against the Oilers, but I figured fate would play a cruel monkey's paw trick, like having the Oilers win the game, albeit at the cost of Joey Moss murdering Tom Gilbert with a candlestick after the game.

In the meantime, I have to get back into the groove of watching this team again. The last time the Oilers were this uncompetive for two years straight was in the early 1990s, when I used to delude myself into thinking a trade for Bob Beers was going to spark a miracle drive to the playoffs. I'm too wizened and cynical to expect the Oilers to do much with the the remaining 15 games, so I'll just follow along for the Brian Burke Push and hope for the Oilers to knock the Vancouver Canucks out of the playoffs in the last game of the season.

And when wins barely matter, we can still resign ourselves to the bird-watching of prospects getting their first at bats. Tonight we see what Theo Peckham can do in his first NHL game after getting called up from the Springfield Falcons in place of the perpetually injured Mathieu Roy. A 75th pick overall, Peckham has come a long way from playing with teenagers last year in the OHL, and with his size he can lay out a good bodycheck. But can he skate? I can't think of a better way of spending my Friday night other than finding out.

Bob Beers, eh? I remember thinking it was Kevin Todd who was going to get this team back on track. The Todder!

I was convinced that Zdeno Ciger was going to be our savior.

And Dave Manson. Don't forget about him.

The Todder!

Kevin Todd was an ideal third-line left-wing in NHL 94 for the SNES. I remember many a Craig Mactavish goal coming from one of Todd's patented from-the-corner feeds.

I'm spending my Friday night playing video games with a team of 24 others, probably 23 of whom I've never met in my life. Who's the bigger loser?

Mikey: Please, don't tell me you're going to waste a perfectly good Friday night watching the Oilers. Wouldn't you rather be happy?

I'm hearing beers at the Star tonight. Let's drink some.

Wow, alcohol has started talking to you, too?
