Anyhow, check it, fools: the Oilers indulged in some hot third-rounder-on-third-rounder action today, trading defenceman Danny Syvret to the Flyers in exchange for AHL centreman Ryan Potulny. From the Canwest News Service:
The Edmonton Oilers added depth at forward on Friday, acquiring centreman Ryan Potulny from the Philadelphia Flyers. So, do I have some analysis? DO I HAVE SOME ANALYSIS?
In exchange, the Flyers receive defenceman Danny Syvret.
Potulny, 23, scored 21 goals and 26 assists for the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, during the 2007-08 season. He also had one assist in seven National Hockey League games with the Flyers.
The Flyers’ third-round (87th overall) selection in the 2003 entry draft has scored seven goals and seven assists in 44 career NHL games.
The six-foot, 190-pound native of Grand Forks, N.D., played three seasons with the University of Minnesota prior to joining the Flyers’ organization.
Syvret, 22, was drafted by the Oilers in the third round (81st overall) in the 2005 entry draft. He scored two goals and 18 assists in 63 regular season games this past season with the Springfield Falcons and Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.
“Ryan was a good player for our organization, but this was a deal based on a need, as we added depth to our defence,” said Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren.
Syvret scored 34 goals and 88 assists in parts of four seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights prior to joining the Oilers organization.
He was part of Canada’s gold-medal winning team at the 2005 world junior championship in Grand Forks.
