The remaining UFA scraps

In an interview with Dan "whiz-kid" Tencer earlier this week, Kevin Lowe mentioned that the Oilers were looking at signing a particular player, although it wouldn't be a "earth-shattering move." Tencer guessed that it was Yannic Perreault, but seeing how the Oilers are "flush down the middle," Lowe said he wasn't really looking for a centreman.

Best guess is Lowe's after a good role winger for the fourth line, whether it be a slugger or a cheap veteran that knows how to check, although I think it's less likely to be a slugger since he spent part of his interview talking up Stortini and downplaying the need for the team to have an enforcer. And with Lowe looking for a role player, the good news is that we don't have to worry about Glen Murray or Bryan Smolinksi coming to camp.

A couple of web board dudes have already mentioned Martin Gelinas, which was my first thought, although he kind of fell off my radar last year in Nashville and apparently rounded out the season with a knee injury. Still, at 38 he still skates well and can check, and it totally fits the team's training camp M.O. to invite an ex-Oiler. And while it may seem like overkill, I don't think the Oilers would be crazy to invite another veteran defenceman for depth, like Jassen Cullimore, so long as they are willing to come as part of a tryout (which wouldn't be likely, I guess). Eight to ten defencemen sounds absurd, but half of them will almost certainly be injured by November if the last couple seasons are anything to go by.

Anyway, here's a list of the remaining UFAs, along with their age and 2007 salary, and hoo boy is it slim pickings. And it's amazing how many players have skipped off to Russia in the last month and a half (this list is as up to date as I could maintain without rolling my eyes back into my skull from boredom -- a grown man shouldn't be spending his Saturday Googling Freddy Braithwaite to see if he's still in the league or not):

We're flush with centres? Where is Lowe getting this idea? I mean, I guess centres, period, yes, half the team is listed at C, but another vet, it's been said before, would be lovely, though I'd take Gelinas back any day.

Oh, and Sean Hill has gone to Switzerland. Scratch him from the list.

I guess the idea is that the Oil are flush with enough young, improving centres that plugging up a spot with a veteran would just stall the development of the Oilers' prospects. Or something like that.

Oh, and Sean Hill has gone to Switzerland.

Aha! I missed that one. Thanks.

What about a defenseman? I know they have a full load of them already, but I think that a Bret Hedican/Aaron Miller type of guy could be very useful.

If not, what position do you think that we are weakest in?

Good blog, man.

So, you consider yourself a grown man, do you. Interesting.

I have the ear hair to prove it.

Malik is still unsigned? Willis must be spinning in his grave.

I always liked Carney - any thoughts on whether he still has gas left in the tank?

Mark Parrish should be on there, and Mr. Weaver signed with St. Louis.

It's amazing no one keeps a truly updated list of these guys somewhere.

My guess would be not much. Going by Desjardins, he did alright playing crappy people with good teammates; I don't know if a 38-year-old 6th/7th defenceman is really worth having around.

If we're looking for someone of that ilk, Hedican or Cullimore is probably a better bet.

Also, who the hell knew Brad Norton was still kicking around?

I have the ear hair to prove it.

Don't forget your thinning hair line.

Thanks, Shep.

And I ask you all this: is there any player more likely than Gelinas to be the player that Lowe is interested in?

Zeke said...

Agreed. Gelinas will always have a spot on my fourth line.

Atlanta's allegedly gunning for him, but I haven't heard of him actually signing.

I believe Brashear is still a Capital as well.

Gelinas is an excellent option. I was hoping the Flames were going to take a run at him this summer (we got Andre Roy instead!)

I hear that Alexei Semenov has potential. Big body, offensive ability - you name it. I hear he once made Janne Niinimaa expendable, and that was back when Niinimaa was good.

There must be something behind the scenes (probably connected to his fighting with Tom Renney last season) that's putting teams off. There's a ton of teams that could use him.

Can't see why anyone with try to pluck JDD off waivers with two pretty capable goaltenders still unsigned who would likely play for less on a one year deal. If he sticks through camp it should be on merit.

just a note....my word verification: FUXSTR......that's like a porn stars vanity plate
