The Big Flop

video

Now I hate Todd Bertuzzi, The Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks as much as anyone, but this dive very late in the game by Ryan Johnson is so lame that I'm forced to point it out. He flies upward. Of course, it almost decided the outcome of the game, which makes it extra lame. I suggest a puck bunny boycott until he learns to play the game like a man.

Johnson dove, but Bertuzzi commited a blatant foul and got a penalty he deserved.

Lord Bob, we disagree! At worst, it looks like a glancing blow on the numbers. Johnson actually veers away as Bertuzzi lets up, then jumps up into the air after stopping at the boards.

Plus, diving sucks no matter what.

Should have been two for each.

Now will the league fine Johnson and put him on that "public list" they used to brag about? I'm guessing no.

Bertuzzi hit Johnson no harder and no dirtier than Ohlund hit Bertuzzi two seconds later.

Johnson should have gotten two minutes (which he didn't) and he should get a one game suspension (which he won't). I love how he flails out his arms a full second after the soft hit. Putz. Bertuzzi should not have been penalized. And the fact that both Lee and Crawford described it as embellished a 'little bit' is cause for concern about the future earaches that the rest of this year's HNIC western telecasts are sure to bring. Lee should be limited to Olympic diving coverage and equestrian. And Crawford needs to lose an octave.

Speaking of earaches, did anyone else catch P.J. Stock's stumbling, jarheaded attempt to keep up with the action when calling the night's highlights on After Hours? Jesus fuck that guy is bad at his job.

And yeah, this should have been two apiece. Diving pisses me off. Remember when they used to call that?

I personally think the penalty for diving should be a swift kick in the junk from Stan Weir.

And then a two and ten.

His own teammates should be embarassed. And he should be forced to wear "Princess" on his namebar for one week.

I didn't watch the game so I don't know what penalty Bertuzzi got or what the context was... but before you curse Ryan Johnson to a puck bunny free life, ignore the bodycheck and watch each player's FEET. As Bertuzzi curls away from the check it looks to my eye that his skate catches Johnson's. A (probably) unintentional slewfoot/trip and a deserved 2 minute penalty.

It was a borderline play at worst that would have never got called unless the name 'BERTUZZI' was stitched on the back of the jersey. The reffing really wasn't great both ways in this game.

Well it's the same thing as a high stick on a shot follow through or interference when you crash into someone when you're looking the other way. It's a penalty no matter how you slice it but it's not, you know, Bertuzzi-ESQUE.

johnson was full on italian league soccer on this one. in todd we rust was making a stop at the boards and, either intentionally or not, tripped him. 2 for each. and a punch in the nuts for johnson. they should have gave the even up call for that trip in ot.

Actually, though I'm still on my high horse about the fact that a legitimate tripping call should have been made on Bertuzzi (and no dive), it seems I've missed a major point: the actual penalty called was boarding. THAT is something to complain about.

PS - 3 posts in a row with annoyingly emphatic capitals! Deal with it, jerks! :P

I don't get the idea behind penalizing both players in a situation where one of them dives. (Not that I'm saying Johnson did. And Luongo sure as hell didn't when he got called for unsportsmanlike earlier in the game.)

If you're saying the diving player is faking it, doesn't it follow that the original infraction never happened?

It's a cop-out. When the human element eventually rears its appropriately imperfect head and the ref fucks up one of these calls, it's better not to set it up in a way where one team gets burned by it. I don't know what they do with player data on diving, ie who does it all the time, but if they use some of that then hopefully it leads to a slightly cleaner game.

Also, there's a whole lot of grey between me two-handing you in the back of the leg and you embellishing it and a situation where you graze me and I dive headlong into the boards. Unfortunately it's just not as black and white as "the original infraction never happened". A lot of valid penalties also involve embellishment.

It's saying that look, there was an infraction by one player, but it clearly wasn't to the extent the victim made it out to be, and by embellishing it the victim is being disrespectful to the game, hence an unsportsmanlike penalty.

Looked like a viscious, potentially career-ending hit from behind to me.

Bertuzzi shoulda been thrown outta the game.

That's straight outta the Jarkko Ruutu playbook.
