It's a cop-out. When the human element eventually rears its appropriately imperfect head and the ref fucks up one of these calls, it's better not to set it up in a way where one team gets burned by it. I don't know what they do with player data on diving, ie who does it all the time, but if they use some of that then hopefully it leads to a slightly cleaner game.<BR/><BR/>Also, there's a whole

I don't get the idea behind penalizing both players in a situation where one of them dives. (Not that I'm saying Johnson did. Actually, though I'm still on my high horse about the fact that a legitimate tripping call should have been made on Bertuzzi (and no dive), it seems I've missed a major point: the actual penalty called was boarding. johnson was full on italian league soccer on this one. in todd we rust was making a stop at the boards and, either intentionally or not, tripped him. 2 for each. and a punch in the nuts for johnson. they should have gave the even up call for that trip in ot.

Well it's the same thing as a high stick on a shot follow through or interference when you crash into someone when you're looking the other way. It's a penalty no matter how you slice it but it's not, you know, Bertuzzi-ESQUE.

It was a borderline play at worst that would have never got called unless the name 'BERTUZZI' was stitched on the back of the jersey. The reffing really wasn't great both ways in this game.

I didn't watch the game so I don't know what penalty Bertuzzi got or what the context was... but before you curse Ryan Johnson to a puck bunny free life, ignore the bodycheck and watch each player's FEET. As Bertuzzi curls away from the check it looks to my eye that his skate catches Johnson's. A (probably) unintentional slewfoot/trip and a deserved 2 minute penalty.

Johnson should have gotten two minutes (which he didn't) and he should get a one game suspension (which he won't). I love how he flails out his arms a full second after the soft hit. Putz. Bertuzzi should not have been penalized. And the fact that both Lee and Crawford described it as embellished a 'little bit' is cause for concern about the future earaches that the rest of this year's HNIC
